Natural light Portrait on location

I love using flash mixed with ambient for my outdoor portraits, but sometimes the light is just so good it needs nothing more than a little redirection to get it to fill just where you want it. Today was one of those days so this afternoon, I took a break from designing bespoke wedding albums and went out for a walk with the family and took only a 50mm lens and a 105mm lens on a mid-range DSLR to travel light – even when I’m not shooting professionally, I always have a camera with me :¬) After much arguing and cajolling I manged to get my lad to stand in a superb location with backlighting from the late autumn sunshine and used the 105macro lens wide open at f/2.8 for minimum DOF and maximum compression effect. This lens is a superb performer at wide apertures, remaining very sharp from edge to edge and virtually no chromatic abberations. The lens flare was added in the computer :¬)

If you’d like an awesome, impact portrait of you and your kids like this one, call the studio on 01924 229800 and have a chat about meeting on location for a shoot.

Excite Clothing: Kids

Back in the studio with the crew from Excite today to shoot some kids clothes for the website. Excite director Claire managed to rustle up some models from within her dad’s family and, although they’d never modelled before, I think it turned out fine. Must work with kids again sometime, the studio was awash with Haribo and other sweet delights- the kids hardly got a look in nom nom :¬)

Lots of edits to get through from the shoot, so here is just a sample.

Wentbridge House wedding: Andy & Nikki

Back at Wentbridge House again today for Nikki & Andy’s wedding. Nikki & Andy saw me shooting a wedding at Wentbridge House last November while they were at the venue looking around and as they left they took a card. Here we are 11 months later and I was shooting their wedding at the venue! We had a great day, the weather was kind – not as sunny and bright as yesterday but the overcast conditions of today are far nicer in my opinion for wedding photos albeit not as warm for the guests. We did the bridal preps at Nikki’s home in Horbury Bridge before heading to Wentbridge House for the ceremony and the formals. At the end of the night and before first dance, Andy and Nikki asked if I’d shoot them in the bridal suite – how could I refuse?! I love shooting in places with character, it’s what I do for most of my fashion and boudior shoots, and I love the challenge of shooting with flash but still keeping the ambience of the place. Here’s a very quick slideshow and not all the images have been edited – you will see quite a few straight out of camera but its been a busy weekend with two weddings and I’ve a load of commercial quotes to catch up with as well as wedding album edits! Hopefully more to follow shortly

Wentbridge House wedding: Hallers & Tess

What a glorious autumn day for a wedding! Tess & Paul were married at St John’s church in Wentbridge and with Tess’ dad conducting the service, it meant Tess was walked down the isle by their 5 year old son Noah who did a very confident performance in giving away his mum! Out into the autumn sunshine and a pleasant walk down to Wentbridge House for drinks on the lawn and the photos. This is just a very quick taster as its late now and I have to charge all the batteries and empty the flash cards for tomorrow’s wedding, also at Wentbridge House. More after the weekend.

Excite Clothing shoot no.3

Excite Clothing were back in the studio today to finish off the plus size range and to shoot a few more impact shots but also to do a few more shots in the size 10 range. For the plus size we used Jenna again, while for the size 10 we used a new model, Bianca – a Romanian exchange student. When I met Bianca, my first impression was that she was quite shy, maybe because of the language barrier, but in front of the camera, she was awesome! It is a real talent when models can perform for the camera, changing poses and expression, and it gives a real input into the shoot and, of course, makes my job easier as I can concentrate on the shoot without having to think about directing the model. I think Claire and Callum of Excite Clothing along with me, thought we’d found a new star and the face of Excite, only to discover Bianca is only in the UK until December before moving on to Rome to finish her studies! Grrr! I think we’re going to have to use her again very soon before she disappears!

After shooting the size 10s, we finished off the plus size range, mainly winter coats which weren’t in stock at the last shoot, but we also shot a few more impact shots for flyers and promotions. I’d noticed a location with a lot of potential just recently as I passed Thornes Park, so I decided to give it a go there for the shots, thinking the autumn colour would be good for the shots and as it turned out, along with glorious autumnal sunshine, it was! We shot all the impact shots in around 20 minutes keeping the lighting very simple but at the same time enhancing the autumn feel. I co-opted Callum as a lighting assistant and showed him just what a California Sunbounce really can do, while adding a little fill with a CTO’d speedlight set at around 1/4 power. Here are a few from the shoot.

A Chinese Delegation at the Town Hall

Working in the town hall this morning on a commission from Wakefield Council to photograph a group of Chinese delegates over on a trip to meet with headteachers and staff from the Wakefield district. Group shots are more tricky than they first seem, I know that from wedding groups. There’s loads of problems associated with these shots, mainly that the light fall off over a big group is immense with the back row receiving around half the light of those at the front and taller folks can cast shadows over smaller folks and then there’s the problem of making sure everyone has their eyes open and is actually looking at the camera! I was offered the stairs just inside the town hall for the shots and the brief was to gather the Chinese delegates, the Lord Mayor and a group of local authority staff as they all arrived at 12:30 and to shoot them as quickly as possible with as little fuss as possible. So, I arrived in plenty of time to recce the place and set the lights up ahead of the shot and work out what I was going to do. I decided to go with a couple of speedlights high up and into silver refelctor brollies as brollies give a larger spread of light than softboxes. By setting the lights high up and quite a way back from the group I was hoping for a bigger and more even spread that would cover the group. As i knew the light fall off would be quite rapid, I anticipated that behind the group would appear black and have little detail, so I placed a speedlight on the half landing immediately behind where the group would stand, set at around 1/16th power, just to light the background. I also made a last minute decision to put a fourth speedlight behind me and angled upwards to light the ceiling above the group and also add just a touch of extra fill and I set this to around 1/8th power fitted with a diffuser to break up the light. A quick couple of test shots to ensure that the light was how I’d envisaged, then a case of waiting for the delegation to arrive.

At bang on 12:30 all the required delegates were in the foyer so I called order and arranged them on the first five rows of the stairs, ensuring the didn’t go beyond the big archway over the stairs to avoid anyone going into shadow. I wanted the Lord Mayor and the Chinese at the front but they seemed determined to stay with their allotted local authority figure so I just ran with it. True to the brief I was very quick and took less than a minute to pop off around seven shots, pausing only once to check the lighting. It’s always nerve jangling at a shoot like this as, just with weddings, you get one chance to get it right! In the end it turned out OK and I got the formal shot which has now been printed and mounted ready for presenting to the delegates before they return to China on Thursday. Although its hard to tell on this small image, the Lord Mayor’s eyes are open!
