MK Illuminations installation team

I met up with Russ and the MK Illuminations installation gang at Crystal Peaks shopping centre  in Sheffield tonight at around 8pm with the aim of getting some shots of them dismantling the Christmas lights. We had intended to get shots of them doing an installation job but due to various reasons this never happened so instead we went for a dismantle shoot and hope that no-one will spot the difference in the brochure ;¬) Owen, Luke and Mick provide the rope access skills to clamber around amongst the beams high up in the atrium whilst the rest of the team worked from ladders or a large cherry picker. The operation was pretty slick and the main showpiece was taken down smoothly and quickly bubble wrapped along with the rest of the lights and loaded onto an articulated lorry for haulage back to the depot.

Lighting was tricky because the guys were mostly dressed in black, were working around 50ft above me against glass which made for a black night time backdrop and to cap it all I’d left my light stands in the studio even though I was confident I had them in the back of the car :¬( This meant I had to do some MacGyver style lighting, strapping speedlights to parts of the mall and on top of a monopod which was balanced against a tripod or other structure! The speedlights, as good as they are, were struggling to light the guys up in the gods but we eventually got some pictures of the lads at work which will illustrate their efforts.

Millenium bridge & Queen’s Mill, Castleford

Out with the camera again capturing some images for the WMDC commission for their website and brochure work. I started the day trying to get some shots of industrial buildings and factories but it is proving difficult at times due to extreme paranoia of anyone with a camera! While photographing one factory frontage from the public footpath, the MD sent out security to find out what I was doing and to try and make me delete the images. Honestly! These folks are so clueless, firstly they can’t force anyone to delete images and secondly, while I’m on public land they can’t prevent me from photographing their building but you would think that they would appreciate the publicity that WMDC will be giving them and also the fact they have been highlighted as an exemplary business in the area. I decided to forget the factories and moved on to Millenium bridge and Queen’s mill in Castleford for some more dramatic landscapes.

Bagden Hall wedding photographer: Nick & Emma

I’ll be shooting Nick and Emma’s wedding at Bagden Hall in a couple of weeks time, so it was high time we met up for the pre-wedding chat. We’d been meaning to do this over the Christmas period but the weather (and my man flu) hampered things a bit, plus I ended up on the London shoot as well. I met up with Nick and Emma and the girls, Olivia and Harriet, at Newmillerdam for a bit of a shoot as well as to go through the schedule for the big day. The bright overcast light was ideal for photography and we got some nice snaps. The pre-wedding shoot served not only to get Nick and Emma used to the camera but also gave Olivia and Harriet chance to me me as they will be flower girls on the day. Here’s a montage using some of today’s images.

Happy New Year!

So, that’s it for 2012 and what a busy and hectic year it has been for me! I’ve had the pleasure of shooting lots of nice people in bridal wear, workwear and underwear; in the studio, in the home and on location. I’ve shot for multi-nationals such as CocaCola and Marstons and local firms like Gawthorpe’s butchers and all have been great fun. The blog stats make interesting reading so I thought I’d share them with you:

83,000 hits on the blog from 130 different countries with the top three being Great Britain, USA and India, with over 55,000 hits from within the UK! Apparently I posted 156 entries in 2012 making a total of over 578 posts in the blog archives. Thanks to all those who visited and taken the time to look through my work and comment. I hope, in these difficult times, that 2013 might be just as busy and productive and i look forward to working with a whole raft of new faces.

All the best for 2013

Rotherham Golf Club wedding: Scott & Joanne

Well, Scott and Joanne’s was the last wedding of the year and what a wet one! I’ve been very lucky in having almost no really wet weddings this year despite the awful weather but today Mother Nature made up for that! The rain was lashing at the conservatory windows as we did the bridal preps and it hadn’t abated much by the time I caught up with Scott at Rotherham Golf Club but we still managed to nip outside for a few shots of the guys who, I’m guessing some at least, had never swung a golf club before judging by their stances! The rain had eased enough by the end of the ceremony to allow us to get out for a few shots and the large covered stone porch meant that, in the main, only the photographer got wet ;¬) But, Scott and Joanne were willing to join me in the wet conditions and we had 10 minutes with and without brolly to get a few outdoor shots before finishing off inside on the main staircase. It was a shame about the weather as this is the first time I’ve shot at Rotherham Golf Club and during my recce a few days ago (also wet!) I had sussed out some nice spots for the shoot. Let’s hope I’m luckier next time I get to work this golf club!

Westfield Stratford City Commercial Shoot

After a hectic build-up and a workload that had me in a spin, Christmas came and went in the blink of an eye, but at least the three days I had off gave me chance to relax and have a beer ahead of the next onslaught that came in the form of a shoot at London’s Stratford City shopping centre! The seven labours of Heracles were nothing compared to this shoot! Collecting the apples of the Hesperides, cleaning the Stables of Augeas or fighting Cerberus, the two-headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld would all have been relatively simple tasks compared to obtaining a press pass and then visiting Europe’s biggest shopping mall at 16:00hrs on a Friday night two days after the Boxing Day sales had begun. I suspect most of the southern half of England were in the mall that night, wandering round in an aimless daze and after queuing for 15mins to get into the car park and then battling through a sea of humanity to the management suite, I finally got adorned with the said pass and was out shooting! Fortunately, the crowds weren’t as bad outside and inside they had dispersed a little around 17:30 but when I did leave at 18:30, it took over half an hour to get out of the car park! Hopefully, I won’t have to go back there again!
