Worsley wedding photographer: Scott & Jasmine

Worsley wedding photographer: Scott and Jasmine have just returned from their wedding trip to Santorini and today were getting dressed up all over again for a wedding blessing on their home turf in Boothstown near Manchester. Given the temperature we had today, they could be forgiven for thinking they were still in Greece! We met up with Jasmine and the girls at her mum’s house for the bridal preps before heading down to Boothstown Methodist Church to catch up with Scott and the boys. Jackets had been omitted from the Greek wedding and they certainly weren’t required today either as we photographed the men ahead of Jasmine’s arrival. After the blessing and the confetti shot at the church, we went with the parents and bridal party down to the Bridgewater canal for the wedding shoot where the location and the early evening light were perfect for the photography. Another wedding was taking place at the nearby Worsley Court House where I photographed Lee & Katrina last year, but as Scott & Jasmine’s wedding blessing  was late in the day, the other wedding had long gone and I we had the canal and the soft light to ourselves. With some gorgeous images in the camera, we headed back to the British Legion Club in Boothstown for the after party and celebrations though the limited photo opportunities there just about ended the photography. Here’s a selection from the day and I can definitely feel a ‘love the dress’ shoot coming along :¬)

Yorkshire landscape photographer: Of Days gone by!

A Yorkshire landscape photographer’s dream! This is not England in the 1930s, but England in 2013! Not a sight I come across very often but these stooks of corn looked fantastic standing in lines drying out in the weak sunshine. The light was awful and I had to use a combination of grads to hold back the sky but rest assured, as soon as I get a forecast for a decent sunset, I will be back! I took this shot using the Fuji X-Pro 1 with a 14mm f/2.8 lens and 1.5stops of ND filter. I suspect I will be back also with either a bride or a model of some description :¬) Watch this space……

Sandburn Hall Wedding photographer: Alex & Melissa

Today was my first day as a wedding photographer at Sandburn Hall, York but for once I was acting as second shooter. The wedding was one of my friend’s gigs but there were complications as the bride is blind, the groom almost blind and quite a few of the guests are also blind or partially sighted. So, in return for one of Ian’s famous curry and beer nights at his place, I went along as director and organiser so that I could assist with posing everyone and generally help out. I did take my camera and do a bit of second shooting and I’ve posted a small selection of my stuff below. However, I mainly acted as lighting assistant and director so that Ian could concentrate on the photography. Alex and Melissa were a great couple and very much up for the photo shoot as were all the guests. The weather was superb, if a little windy, and we got some great images for the album which, sadly, Melissa will never see after loosing her sight to an illness, but the friends and family will have some great reminders of a fabulous day in York at Sandburn Hall. Portrait of a Golf Club Captain

Before I went away I got a call from Ron who wanted a formal portrait to hang in the golf club in Spain where he has just been made Captain. A golfer all his life and past president of his local club, he now spends quite a bit of time on the Costa del Sol taking on the German and Australian fraternity in the club. Having booked him in the diary, it was a quick and easy shoot with a classic three light set-up against a mid grey background. I took the mid-grey down a stop by limiting the light hitting it and also punched in a bit of fill from camera left just to soften the edge transfer and lighten the laughter lines. Should look good on the wall in Spain :¬)

NEW College results day!

Home from holiday yesterday and into NEW College, Pontefract for 06:30hrs this morning to photograph the A level results day! The brief was to shoot some formal and candid shots of the kids getting their results, There were mostly happy faces and I saw several pupils with four A* A levels!! A couple had also secured paces at Oxbridge so the college must be getting something right. However, this year due to building works, the results were given out in the theatre which is like a blacked out cave and worse still, the black walls are not matt!! The up shot is that no matter where I situated the lights, I was getting some shocking specular highlights on the walls! Also, I like three lights minimum when shooting against black to ensure my subject is separated from the background but there wasn’t enough room to get the hair lights in behind the pupils. They were killing me with the small amount of space and reflective walls. Anyway, I managed in the end, I suppose it’s where experience counts for something :¬)

Fuji X-Pro 1: A Postcard from Luxembourg

Well, I’ve just returned from a thoroughly relaxing two week family break cycling, eating and drinking our way round Luxembourg and the Netherlands! Before I went, I splashed out on the Fuji X Pro 1 camera system and for two reasons: firstly, I wanted to leave the Nikon system at home and travel with something light that I could have with me all the time and secondly, I didn’t want to compromise on image quality. Any photos I take had to be of publication quality. The Fuji X Pro 1 seemed to fit the bill and I have heard and read some great reviews. It was amazing to carry my full camera kit in a tiny bag (my Nikon outfit is like carrying a small person on my back!) and although I didn’t get the opportunity to use it as seriously as I wanted, I did get to know the camera well. I think I will do a full review in a couple of weeks, especially after I have done a portrait session with it. For now though, here are a few of my holiday snaps!  Everything done with the X Pro 1 and either 14mm, 35mm or 55-200mm lens.
