Wakefield Headshots Photographer: Kyra

As a headshots photographer I get to work with a lot of actors and musicians to create headshots for their agency website or LinkedIn profiles and not just locals. Kyra is from York but found me on an internet search and liked the look of my work enough to make the journey over  to my studio. Kyra needed headshots for her work as a TV extra and so we shot a variety of images on a white background as well as grey and black backgrounds. I like to shoot a few on the mid-grey as it does make it very easy for me to add in different backgrounds should I need to do so. A headshots session is usually a quick affair lasting around 45mins to an hour in the studio. It’s certainly enough time to create some beautiful portraits that convey the character of the subject. Of course, I shot these on the amazing Pentax 645z medium format camera with a 150mm portrait lens.

Headshots on location: Swan Energy

As a commercial photographer, one of the things I regularly get asked to do are headshots on location, usually at the offices of the company. Today I was over in Slaiithwaite, Huddersfield to create some on location headshots for Swan Energy. The offices were very small indeed, simply in an old one up one down terrace house, and this type of location could present problems. Certainly there was nowhere to set up any kind of back drop or complex light set-ups, but this is where experience comes into play. I simply used a plain. light-coloured wall as a background and by lighting it with a speedlight, I was able to wash out any colour and make it appear white. I then brought in a second speedlight in my small Westcott Octa that I use so very often, and set this up as a key light slightly high and at 45degrees to the subject. Using this simple light setup, I was able to create some studio style portraits for the website. Once I had done headshots of the staff, I then made a quick executive portrait of the director at his desk. Again, a simple light setup using a single SB800 in the octa and balancing it to daylight allowed me to create an executive portrait with the company branding in the background.

Wakefield Commercial Photographer: PR shoot for Redrow Homes

Today I was providing press/PR photography for Redrow Homes at a school in Morley. As a Wakefield commercial photographer, I get called upon to shoot a lot of PR images for various agencies and companies and my brief is to provide a variety of shots that can be used to illustrate the publicity piece in local papers and industry magazines. The theme of the shoot today was cycling proficiency and Redrow Homes have sponsored a specialist cycle proficiency group to come into the school to teach the kids road safety and cycling skills, including basic bike maintenance. Redrow also presented the school with a selection of bird and bat boxes to be used in the school grounds.

Wakefield commercial photographer: Viamaster shoot

Today I dropped by the Viamaster depot as they were in need of a commercial photographer to shoot some images of their trucks that have just been printed up with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance logo and details. The shoot was limiting in as much as we were shooting in the Viamaster yard along with all of the associated clutter, but I managed to get the trucks parked so that they were visible in the shot without too much distraction. I made a few images featuring just the trucks but then a series with the Viamaster staff and YAA reps in the frame. I used the 645z for the shoot along with a couple of Profoto B1 heads to give me some good fill light.

Wakefield headshots photographer: Holly & Olivia

A good few years ago I shot a portfolio for the mother of Holly & Olivia so I was pleased to find that, when looking for a Wakefield headshots photographer, she came back to me to create some promo shots for her daughters. The shoot was easy enough as the girls were both excited and up for the shoot so we soon had some great images in the can. I used the Pentax 645Z medium format camera for the shoot and did most of the shots with the amazing 150mm portrait lens. I used a white background and shot it as white but also as a 20% grey which I really like to use on my headshots images. The grey goes with so many colours, it’s very versatile. Here are just a couple of shots from the shoot.

York commercial photographer: The Divorce Hotel

While looking for a York commercial photographer to shoot some PR images for his new business venture, David was given my name by another of my clients. A good deal of my work comes from recommendations which is very flattering and so, after discussing on the phone, I met David and the team at The York Marriatt Hotel for the shoot. The shoot was to get some PR images for The Divorce Hotel, a company that aims to provide a quick and, hopefully, aimicable divirce based in hotels around the country. Later that day, the local TV stations were due to come to interview and gather material for the regional news programmes so I had just a short session before evrything kicked off. I had to photograph the three directors in a hotel setting but without getting any branding in the shots in order to give them a generic hotel look and feel. I used the brasserie for most of the shots as I liked the rich colours and ambient light it offered. As usual, I used s single speedlight in a 70cm octa for key light while dragging the shutter to bring in the ambient light.
