Charlotte’s headshots

Charlotte dropped by the studio today for some headshots that she can send to agencies, job interviews and web sites to help her further her career. I shot the usual classic headshot images which tends to be head and shoulders, a three-quarter shot and a full length shot but I also shot some Hollywood style portraits all using a simple lighting set-up against a white wall. The key light is from a beauty dish bounced into a zebra/gold sunbounce and it gives a really soft wrap around light. Although the images were shot in colour, I do like the B&W versions presented here.

If you are an actor or musician in need of headshots, just call the studio on 01924 229800 or fill in the contact form from the tabs above.

Homage to La Chappelle

Sophie,  a young photography student came by the studio and as part of her photography degree, asked me to critique her portfolio. She’d chosen me because she liked the style of my boudoir images, the genre in which she wants to specialise. After critiquing the portfolio, Sophie was telling me of her up coming shoots, one of which involved shooting a model in the magnificent Castle Howard near York. She was only allowed 2hrs in the building before the public were admitted, so I suggested I came along to help her set up the lights and advise so that she could get the most out of her narrow time slot. As I’m a professional photographer, I was not allowed to shoot anything so that I could not make any commercial gain from the shoot, but I wasn’t looking to do that any way – my role was as advisor and voice activated light stand! Sophie decided to shoot in the style of La Chappelle – a famous photographer who shoots a particularly wacky style. The setting was ideal for what Sophie wanted and model Natasha was dressed in clothes of the Elizabethan period complete with wig and pale make-up. The idea was to make Natasha look more like a puppet than a person and I have to say it all went really well. Sophie got some great images and I took one to show how, by dragging the shutter, its possible to really balance the ambient with flash to get detail in the shadows, This shot was taken hand held at 1/10th second!

I have a workshop planned for early May in a superb location in Manchester where I will be demonstrating how to use flash and ambient to create some moody boudoir images. Contact me if you’d like details or keep your eye on the blog for details in the next week or so. There’s 8 places up for grabs and 7 have gone already! Don’t dispair though as there are several workshops planned for the summer :¬)

Elijah & Neema’s baby bump shoot

Elijah & Neema came over from Warrington today for a baby bump shoot at the studio. Elijah had booked the shoot as a surprise Valentine’s Day gift last month and today they crossed the Pennines to do the shoot. I have to say, I thought Neema looked a little apprehensive on entering the studio, but we had a laugh and a joke and in no time she was relaxed and very much enjoying the flow of things :¬) I think that it shows in this selection of images too – she is so photogenic and has gorgeous clear skin. No airbrushing for Neema, its all straight out of the camera. Gutted I didn’t get to shoot their wedding on the beach in Tanzania :¬(

Paul & Louise at Wentbridge House

It was a grey start to the day as I arrived at Wentbridge House Hotel for the wedding of Paul & Louise but by the time we got to shooting the formals after the ceremony, the skies were clearing and the temperatures rising until it was a positively balmy evening with some gorgeous evening light. We started with the groom getting ready while the bride was away at the hairdressers and by the time Louise arrived and began to get her make-up on, we’d already bagged the groom shots outside. Following the make-up and detail shots we did some bridal portraits in the room before heading downstairs to the ceremony in the Crystal Suite. It was cool outside at first, with quite a stiff breeze but it didn’t stop us having fun though the rose petal confetti exited the frame rather quickly! After the wedding breakfast we had a quick 10 minutes to shoot in some glorious warm evening light in the last few moments of the day – its amazing just how quickly the sun goes! Then after drinks and partying outside in the twilight, it was back to the Crystal Suite for the first dance to the sounds of live band The Munch! A great day all round! Good luck with the honeymoon in flooded Thialand! Slideshow follows, along with a few statics for anyone with an iPhone unable to get the full fat service.

Paul & Ellen pre-wedding at Oakwell Hall

I met up with Paul and Ellen today at Oakwell Hall for a pre-wedding meeting and e-session shoot on a bright but very blustery day. We went through the plans for their big day at Wentbridge House Hotel later this month before moving on to a shoot in the fabulous gardens at the museum. I used to work with Ellen many, many years ago in my former life in IT in the days of the Leeds Permanent Building Society and it was a real surprise when she walked into the studio for the wedding interview – neither of us had any idea of our past acquaintance until we met face-to-face that day.  Looking forward to their Wentbridge House shoot, I’ll almost be part of the furniture there this year with all the weddings I have on the cards. In fact, I’m at Wentbridge House tomorrow for Paul and Louise’s wedding. Hope the wind has dropped by then!

Natasha’s boudoir shoot

Well, I had a great shoot today with a lovely lady in a superb location! Natasha booked me for her boudoir shoot but rather than the studio, we were to use her house for the session. I love the demands of a location shoot – it really gets the creative juices flowing deciding how best to use the place and, more importantly, how best to light it. I enjoy the challenge of lighting as much as the photography in many ways and a concious decision about lighting is usually the first thought in my process of creating an image.  Although I did take the studio lights with me just in case, I ended up (as ever!) using the small Nikon speedlights for the whole of the shoot: on low power, off camera and in manual mode, these guys just deliver consitent output pop after pop! We started in the dining room where I used a blend of ambient feathered with a single flash to create some gorgeous fashion images before moving outside to shoot in furs and then on to  Natasha’s awesome boudoir dressing room where we shot some really nice lingerie images. Natasha has kindly allowed me to post a few here so that you can see just how well we did.
