New College Prospectus ~ Part Deux

Another day on location at NEW College, Pontefract to complete the shoot for this year’s prospectus mopping up a few classes that weren’t in session when I was there on Tuesday. Same format as before, a few minutes in each class before swiftly moving on to the next location. We shot a few more informals in and around the common room today which is always enjoyable plus we did a staff group shot that will be used as a cut-out in the final layout. Here are a few more from today.

Trinity Walk at Dusk

Ad agency Halogen commissioned me for some more shots of Trinity Walk shopping mall, but this time to shoot the site at night time for a different effect. The trick with night time photography is to shoot before the sky goes black, which is just as well seeing as it never really gets dark at the moment! When the sky is black it becomes very hard to get an exposure that covers both the shadows and highlights, whereas at dusk it is much easier to control the exposure while still giving the appearance of night. The only real problem is that the peak time at dusk is a short window and its not possible to be everywhere at once, so tonight I made a start with the entrance around Sainsbury’s and over the next couple of days I will get into the mall itself. Shooting at dusk though can deliver some spectacular results and the starbursts are not created by a filter, its an effect that occurs when the lens has many more iris blades than a typical lens and the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 PC-E lens is well blessed in that department! The image below is not an HDR image but is from a single shot.

Wakefield commercial photographer covering Leeds, York, Harrogate and the whole of Yorkshire.

NEW College Prospectus shoot

Back at NEW college, Pontefract today to shoot a fresh batch of images for the 2011 prospectus. I shot the 2010 images last May and as I walked round the school today, it was really good to see my work blown up and scattered around the school on posters, canvas wraps and, of course, the prospectus in the reception. It was a hard gig last year and was no different this year as we went round the college, nipping into classrooms and shooting a few quick images before moving on to the next room. The pressure is immense as there is literally a few minutes once inside the room to decide on the shot, the lighting and composition and then get it in the bag so that we can pull out as hastily causing as little disruption as possible. I’ll be doing round two of the shoot later this week :¬o Here’s a few unedited images from today – the lighting is nearly all done with a couple of Nikon speedlights and a few gels.

Hanson Bricks corporate shoot

Hanson Bricks of Maidenhead contacted me again recently to commission me to shoot some more brick related images for their submission to this year’s building design awards. Last year I photographed some buildings in and around Wakefield and York and today I was back in York to shoot the Barratt Homes development ‘Reflections’ in the heart of the York alongside a small canal. On the way home I called in at Selby business park to shoot another set of buildings, the Britcom offices. The weather was particularly good for the shoot with blue skies and white clouds enhanced bu a polarising filter to cut glare and deepen the colours. The Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 PC-E lens is just the ticket for this type of work as it allows me to not only keep the verticals straight, but effectively I can use it to double my sensor size by taking two ‘shifted’ images and stitching them seamlessly in Photoshop. Later this week, weather depending, I will be shooting some more images for Hanson in Sheffield and Rotherham.

Lucy & Josh pre-wedding shootng photographer

Again at Newmillerdam for a pre-wedding meeting, this time with Lucy & Josh who are getting married on 27th June at St Peter’s Church, Horbury and then on to Gomersall Park Hotel for the reception. As with yesterday, the weather turned out better than expected and we did most of the shoot around the old boathouse where we were invited to use the rooftop terrace for some shots with panoramic views of the lake in the background.  Following the shoot, we headed to the Waterside Cafe for a mocha and a run through of the timings ahead of the big day.

Rachael & Chris pre-wedding shoot

Chris and Rachael booked me fairly last minute at the Woolley Hall wedding fayre earlier in the year for their wedding at Waterton Park in July and I’m so glad they did. A really lovely couple and I feel like I’ve known them for yonks despite this being only the second time we’ve met and for me, this should bode well for the big day – things always work out better when there’s a rapport between the photographer and the couple. I spotted Rachael straight away but I thought she had a new fella in tow! When we met at the fayre Chris had a shaven head and I thought he was bald, but today he was sporting a thick head of hair! Quite the opposite for me, sporting a thick head of hair at the wedding fayre but today going very bald :¬\ I suggested a meet at Newmillerdam for the pre-wedding shoot and despite a shocking forecast the weather was really quite good and allowed us to have a great photoshoot in my favourite conditions – bright overcast and milky sunshine. Following the pre-wedding meeting, we mopped up the wedding details over a coffee at the newly opened Waterside cafe at Newmillerdam. Let’s hope the weather is like this on July 9th and we should get some great shots of a very photogenic bride :¬)
