Sarah & Steve pre-wedding shoot

Sarah and Steve are getting married at The Ashes wedding venue in Staffordshire at the end of September and due to Sarah working shifts as a nurse, we decided to use the Bank Holiday to meet up to go through the schedule for the day and to have a bit of a pre-wedding shoot. As they’d been down at the Ashes today for their final planning meeting, we chose to meet at Curbar Edge in Derbyshire, about 12 miles south of Sheffield, as they travelled back home. Leaving Wakefield, the weather was really warm and sunny but by the time we got to Curbar, it had really clouded over and there was a threatening sky looming. Undeterred, we made it up onto the edge to get the shoot in before the rain came and as none of us had any coats or jumpers, we drew looks of consternation from the walkers passing by in full winter gear :¬) However, it wasn’t as cold as it looked, though it was windy, and we made the most of the flowering heather and the rocky outcrop for around half an hour or so. I was keen to do a pre-wedding shoot with these guys as I wanted to get a feeling for how best to shoot them and get round the height difference which is pretty obvious – if they stand side by side and I point a telephoto at Steve poor old Sarah isn’t even in the frame!  Anyway, we did our best and had a laugh and I think we got some great images for them to choose a signing board picture to stand alongside the cake.

I’m looking forward to the shooting The Ashes venue as its a couple of years since I last did a gig there and then it was in its infancy but even so I could see the potential. If you’ve not heard of The Ashes, look it up: its a Jacobean Manor house that has had the stables and outbuildings converted specifically for wedding functions. Very nice! Charlene’s baby bump shoot

Charlene and Alan dropped by the studio today for a baby bump shoot just two weeks ahead of the due date. As with all the bump shoots, we began with a white infinity curve before moving on to a black curve for some low key shots. Charlene was very relaxed in front of the camera and  think this shows in the final images and there are some that I’m really pleased with. I’m looking forward to meeting baby Neveah when she comes to the studio with Charlene and Alan in a few weeks time.

Jonathan & Adelle at Cold Coniston Hotel

I travelled up to Cold Coniston Hotel, near Skipton today for Jonathan and Adelle’s wedding. The weather was awesome with dark thunder skies, autumn sun and superb light at the end of the day for the lakeside shots – a real change from yesterday’s weather at Oulton Hall.  I met Adelle and her sister Catherine for some bridal prep shots before heading out front with the boys for the groom shots while she was making the final adjustments before getting into her dress. Following the bridal portraits, we headed down to the McCloud bar for the ceremony and then out onto the terrace for drinks and canapes with the spectacular view over Cold Coniston Hall and lake as a backdrop. Despite a few drops of rain from a passing shower cloud, we stayed outside for all the photos. The evening sky was superb as the wedding breakfast ended and we quickly headed down to the lakeside for more photos of Jonathan and Adelle, racing to get the shots done as the sun headed rapidly behind the nearby hills.

Caroline & Neil at Oulton Hall

The heavens opened for Caroline and Neil’s wedding at Oulton Hall today, but wet weather can’t spoil a shoot at this location and we still ended up with some fabulous images. Due to Neil working down south during the week, we never managed to do a pre-wedding shoot so this was my first time with them and a camera but everything went swimmingly and Caroline especially was a real natural and pleasure to shoot. The Bolton Abbey suite provided the setting for the pre-wedding shots and then it was out in the grounds with the groom and ushers despite some threatening spots of rain which turned into a heavy shower during the ceremony. However, there was a brief break just after the ceremony which allowed us to get the group shots done outside before making a mad dash to the front of the house for the bridal party shots under the huge stone porch while I took a soaking on the courtyard! Back inside to use the main hallway for a few shots before we had to vacate the main building ahead of the other wedding party, but we’d just about wrapped the shoot up anyway. The gods favoured us later in the evening as the rain had stopped by the time the wedding breakfast had finished and Caroline was a great sport in going back out into some very wet grounds, but that half an hour made all the difference and we got some really nice natural shots of both the bride and groom, the bridal party and some guests and parent shots. Its a mammoth weekend for me with two weddings, a baby bump shoot and a pre-wedding meeting so this is a very short slideshow just to give a flavour of the day. I may beef it up once I have the other blog posts online.

Headshots for Veridian

Northampton based consultants, Veridian, dropped by the studio today for a few formal headshots for their website. Veridian is a business venture established by three lovely ladies to provide IT training and consultancy, primarily to the Health Trusts, and once a month they meet in Wakefield to mull over company business. They use Wakefield as a central meeting point as the three directors come from Leicester, Northampton and Durham and today they dropped by the studio before hitting the A1 and M1 to head north and south again. The brief was to capture them as business like while still being friendly and approachable so here are some simple headshots against a grey infinity curve using a loop lighting technique.

The Normandy Landings

The absence of blog posts for the last two weeks is due to the fact I’ve been ‘en vacance’ in France for a bit of a break with the family. Although I took the cameras, I didn’t do as much landscape photography as I’d intended while touring Normady & Brittany, instead I ended up shooting mostly video with the Nikon DSLR. I’ve been fancying getting into video for a while now and combining it with stills to make short films set to music. With the newer generation of DSLR cameras having full HD video, it’s becoming a more easily achievable. However, I’ve learnt very quickly that cinematography is so very different to photography and to make it a bit out of the ordinary is going to have a steep learning curve associated with it! The holiday will soon be a distant memory as its straight back into the saddle with a corporate headshots shoot, two weddings, a baby bump shoot and two pre-wedding meetings in the next 5 days!! Here are a few shots of the spectacular Mont Saint Michel in Normandy.
