Louis’ Christmas portrait

Louis the chocolate Labrador came for a portrait shoot today as a surprise Christmas gift (don’t worry, the  person the gift is for is unlikely to be looking at the blog just now!). I decided on shooting outdoors as I think it is more natural for animals and also they have more freedom and it’s less of a problem if they are boisterous. Louis was very placid though and enjoyed himself on his first visit to Newmillerdam and I chose a spot where he was slightly raised up which gave me the ability to shoot from a low view point so that I was shooting at eye level with him. Being at eye level with the subject, regardless of subject size, is something that I’ve preached over the last 20yrs as a semi-professional wildlife photographer, it just makes for a more powerful image.

Someone enquired about a dog portrait not so long back and when I said I would shoot it outdoors, they immediately dismissed the idea saying that they owned a digital camera and could take outdoor photographs. Well, that may be, but the difference when I photograph outdoors is that I am not shooting with a digital compact or even a DSLR with a standard kit lens. I am shooting with a 300mm or even a 500mm which gives a unique look that is characteristic with big lenses and that is a very shallow depth of field: in simple terms, my subjects stand out from a very soft out of focus background which gives a three dimensional feel to the image that is not achievable with a wide angle or shorter focal length.

I think Louis is going to look very handsome on one of our large ‘naturals’ range. To book your dog in for a shoot, just call 01924 229800.

Martin and the gang

Martin and Toni were back in the studio today with the twins and Bradley and Francesca for an updated family shoot for Christmas gifts. The twins were only babies last time they were here a couple of years ago and what a difference a couple of years can make; full o’ beans and iPad savvy now!  It all went rather smooth apart from Alysia who had her own ideas of what she wanted to do which meant we got loads of awesome images of the very placid and co-operative Joel but shots of Aloysia were far thinner on the ground! Here are a few shots from the shoot.

To book me for your family shoot, just call the studio on 01924 229800. There’s still time to create a very special Christmas gift.

Leanne, Stuart & Lucas in the studio

I photographed Leanne & Stuart in my old studio not long after I first turned professional when they came by with Stuart’s bro for a photo of the three of them for Stuart’s mum & dad. Today they were back for some shots for Christmas presents but this time with son Lucas. Working with the two year old was a synch, but Stuart on the other hand…..! I cannot believe how it is possible for one man to close his eyes in so many photos in a single shoot! Here are a few favorites from the session.

Salford Quays

I dropped by Salford Quays late this afternoon to do some dusk architecture shots and also to recce the place for a future visit. By the time I got there, the very heavy rain and low cloud meant that it was almost dark so I just headed for the nearest vantage point and took a few shots. The trick with dusk shots is to shoot just before it gets dark; you don’t want black night skies as it makes it very difficult to expose for the highlights in the image. The first shot was taken just at dusk and the others later as the sky darkened and the street lighting came on. Notice how the sky has gone from grey to royal blue to shades of purple as the sodium vapour lights begin to kick in. In the last image you can see that by using around 4stops of ND filter, I’ve recorded the sky as a blur as the clouds whipped by during the long exposure! After quick shoot, I walked back to the car, soaked but at least I now know where to go next time I visit and hopefully, the weather will be a lot kinder.

Jodie’s Parisian boudoir shoot

Jodie dropped by for a boudoir shoot today and I decided to shoot it on location for something a bit different. I’m always on the lookout for new places to shoot and this was the first time I’ve used this particular spot so I was looking forward, not only to getting some great images for Jodie, but also some new images for my portfolio and I think I met the brief here :¬) We used several different ‘sets’ around the location, but I really liked the images from the Parisian styled bedroom. I used a couple of speedlights for the shots with a bit of neat set-up to give me a lovely, soft even light which is just augmented by the diffused daylight from a big window behind Jodie.

To book your sumptuous boudoir shoot just call me on 01924 229800 or fill in the contact form and I will get back to you. Mention the word PARISIAN in the contact form and I will shoot you in this location at no extra cost (normally an £80 supplement for this location). The shoots are fun and relaxed and I can guarrantee you some gorgeous images for your album. If you are a photographer and would like some tuition on how to shoot like this, contact me for a 1:1 or 2:1 shoot in this location.

Lighting demo with Demi

Tonight I was at Wakefield Camera Club to do my usual bi-monthly lighting demo. This time I used a couple of softboxes close to the model to give a low key wrap around light which gave definition and shadow to the subject while allowing some light to spill round the front to put detail in the face. I took Demi along as my model and this was the very first time we’d worked together after meeting her while on location at a commercial shoot a couple of months ago. Although I only take a few shots at the demonstrations before handing over to the members, I was pleased with a few of the shots. I’ll arrange a proper shoot with Demi in the near future when I can shoot some better stuff.
