Steam Punk Lighting Demo

Rocked on down to Wakefield Camera Club tonight to do a lighting demo using a couple of steampunks as the models. Graham and Louise had some cracking Victoriana costumes with a bit of modern punk thrown in so it made a change for the members and probably got them lots of images for the future comps. As usual, I’m just there to explain, so I don’t get much chance to photograph but here’s one of the shots I did prior to standing back and letting the members shoot. Simple lighting set-up using a key and two kickers and then a few tweaks in post  :¬)

Wakefield’s Winter Wonderland

The heavy snow was still on the ground today and unexpectedly and totally not forecast were clear skies and a super sunrise. So, I put the wedding edits on hold and headed out with the camera to see what I could capture. I was cheesed off at missing the sunrise, but that’s the BBC weather forecasters for you, and I decided to head to Walton Hall to begin with. From here I hit Newmillerdam which was just superb in beautiful light and deep snow and kept me occupied for quite a while before heading off to Sandal Castle. These shots will be used by WMDC in their 2013 brochure work which I’m curently shooting for.

White winter wedding at Bagden Hall

So long as everyone can get to the venue, heavy snow can be wonderful on a wedding day and today at Bagden Hall for Nick and Emma’s wedding this was certainly the case. Even though we didn’t get blue skies and the snow flurries and cold meant the formal group shots were done indoors, we did get out with the bridal party for some fun snow shots. I love the white winter weddings, the light is awesome and the deep snow just makes for some great romantic images. Emma’s dress really suited the snowy scenes and she brought wellies especially so we could go out and never once complained about the cold  – my kind of bride :¬) They’ve taken the twins, Harriet & Olivia, to Disneyland Paris for a week so I don’t suspect Emma will be thawing out on honeymoon! Here are a few shots from the day……

Mother & Baby shoot with Sarah & Billy

Sarah booked to come back to the studio with Billy for a mum and baby shoot. Last time I saw Billy he was around 4 weeks old and now he’s around 6months and growing rapidly. Sarah wanted to create some spontaneous shots of her and Billy interacting. I shot mostly on a white infinity curve but Sarah also wanted some intimate shots of her and Billy feeding and I decided to do this in a photo noir style on a black curve using lights to simply create shape and texture rather than fully lighting them both. We did some really nice fine art shots and it looks like these are no going to be used by Sarah’s breast feeding group in the literature. Once Billy was suitably stuffed from his feed and had gone really rather soporific, I stuck him on to the green curve for some new born shots but he was getting pretty whacked by now and decided not to play ball after a few shots. We still managed a few good images though and here are a few.

Vintage PIN-UP Shoot with Laura

I’m booked to do a lighting demo at Newark Camera Club next week and I’ve asked Laura to be my model for the night. I used Laura once before at  Wakefield Camera Club for a headshots demo but at these events I don’t usually take many photos so I thought I’d team up with Laura and have a run through what I might do on the night for the Newark brigade. I went through a few different headshots lighting styles using a large octabox and a tri-flector, then we moved onto some full length shots which I thought we might do in the style of vintage pin-up. Laura was a star and very natural and easy to get on with and I know she’s keen to see what we came up with so here’s one for now which I like so much, I gave it a mock magazine cover work over :¬)  Newark Camera Club are in for a treat. More to come.

XSCAPE action shots

I nipped over to Xscape in Castleford today to shoot some action shots on the indoor surfing, Snowzone and climbing wall as part of an ongoing shoot for WMDC. Everyone was forthcoming with the permission to shoot indoors and that made life much easier (Forza MD take note!!). The indoor surfing looked awesome fun, really must go back to have a go at that but I did get a soaking while shooting the images! Snozone was more difficult as the slopes were packed so I couldn’t really use light stands, plus there was a lot of mist in there and no-one seemed to particularly want to be photographed :¬\ The day was saved when a couple of snow boarders agreed to pose.
