Pre-wedding shoot with Lucy & Alan

Lucy & Alan are due to be married at The Treasurer’s House in York next month so it was high time we met up to discuss the details and have a bit of a pre-wedding shoot. As they are from Leeds, we decided to meet up at Kirkstall Abbey for the shoot as it is a favourite place of theirs and the very first place they took their young son Thomas out for the first time. Although the weather was fairly bright this morning, it soon clouded over and was quite dull and cold by the time we met up for the shoot.

The weather wasn’t the only problem we encountered! A fun fair in the car park at the Abbey meant we struggled to find a spot and the Abbey Museum cafe was shut for a wedding reception! Undeterred we started off in the museum gardens before crossing over to the abbey to finish the shoot. As the rain began to fall and we headed back to the cars to head off to find somewhere for a chat, the bride of the abbey wedding arrived dressed in black and purple, a full gothic wedding and just the setting for it. Such a shame about the weather for them!

Lucy and Alan’s wedding is late May so hopefully the weather will have picked up by then and we should get some sunshine to shoot in at the Treasurer’s House and around the streets of York. I’ve put together a little slideshow from the shoot (includes a few bugs!) with some larger images below in case the iFoney/iFad brigade can’t see the slideshow!

Family portrait shoot: The Binns

The Binns family were in the studio today making the most of the gift voucher that Stephen chose for his wife as a Christmas gift. Time soon flies and it’s a while now since Christmas but not a problem so long as we manage to do the shoot whenever it’s convenient to everyone. I used a white sweep to start with and did the whole family before shooting the girls, Lola and Lotte, as a piar as well as individuals. I then changed to a black sweep for the last bit of the session to do some of my low key noir images that look stunning as classic black and white images. Here are a few from the shoot. To book me for your family shoot just call 01924 229800 for a chat.

Wakefield fashion photographer: Tammy

Nicola rang me a couple of weeks ago to book a fashion shoot for her daughter’s 14th birthday and we agreed a date in the Easter holidays would cool and so yesterday, Nicola drove over from Oldham for the shoot bringing along the star of the show, Tammy. When my diary says a shoot for a 13yr old (she is 14 tomorrow!!), I kind of expected something along the lines of the party shoot I did a couple of days ago, I wasn’t expecting a stunning young woman who would grace the cover of any magazine! Tammy is beautiful, tall and elegant and shooting her was great fun, even if she was a little nervous and self consious with mum looking on. I reckon she could go far with modelling, she’s already around 5’10” I would say, and I am sure she wouldn’t look out of place in an M&S advert! We shot mostly on the coloured infinity curves before moving through the studio and shooting in deiiferent sets and ultimately ended up with a few outside in the cold spring air. I hope she likes what we got and i am sure that if she has a few more shoots, we are looking at a future great model! Happy birthday for tomorrow Tammy :¬)

Wakefield Commercial photographer: Leone

Leone contacted me to book a shoot which combined some commercial and fashion photography aimed at updating her portfolio and showing off some merchandise. The goods we had to shoot were three sets of shorts, three custom headpieces, a pair of custom decorated shoes and a necklace which all worked out nicely for the logistics of the shoot. We used a top local hair stylist Jess White and a great MUA in the form of Lauren Ashley who used Leone as a blank canvas on which to create some great fashion looks for each of the three sets. I used the barley sweep to start with as that was still in place from the kids party shoot a couple of days ago, before moving on to purple and black sweeps for the final sets. The shoot was great fun and we all got on well and I suspect it’s a team that will be working together again soon :¬)

Teenager party shoots: Emily & friends

Straight from the wedding fair at Nostell to the studio to shoot 12yr old Emily and her friends. I photographed the wedding of Emily’s mum and dad a few years ago now, probably the first wedding I ever did as a professional photographer! It was Emily’s birthday just before Easter but due to my workload and dance exams (Emily’s not mine!) we couldn’t fit the shoot in. So, a  belated treat for Emily and her friends but worth the wait I think. We shot some funky fashion images which I then tweaked to give them that edgy colour-washed look that is currently de rigueur. They had a good time and, although the thought of nine 12yr old  girls in the studio was daunting, it turned out fine apart from my being subjected to Lady Gaga at full blast :¬\ Had to get swiftly into the car and steady my frazzled nerves with a bit of my favourite death metal :¬)

Commercial photographer Wakefield: frontline Magazine

Yesterday I received a call from Nicola Adams of Adams Neuro Physiotherapy Ltd with a request to shoot some headshots of her for an article about her firm due to be printed in Frontline,  the magazine of the Charted Society of Physiotherapy. The beauty of being a full time commercial photographer is that I can just alter my schedule to shoot at short notice in just such a case as this. Just before I left for the studio this morning though, I was contacted by one of the designers of Frontline who wanted to chat about the photos: turns out that, as Nicola had now booked a pro, they wanted some shots of Nicola on location rather than just a headshot against a white sweep as I’d been asked. However, Nicola works in the community and is mobile so doesn’t have an office as such so it was time to come up with a cunning plan as Baldrick would say. Still using the studio, I decided I’d just shoot Nicola in the doorway of the changing room which meant there would be another doorway directly behind her giving the feel of an office or physio room. I also figured I could use the French doors that lead to the new bedroom set and by using an 85mm fairly wide open, I knew I could throw those doors out of focus enough to stop them being a distraction. It was then just a case of bringing in the Octa90 for the softest wrap around light and I just balanced this with daylight and added a bit of an accent for separation. Simples!
