Commercial photography Wakefield: Trinity Walk Christmas lights shoot

Commercial photography Wakefield: For my last Christmas lights shoot I was again in Wakefield, this time at Trinity Walk where MK Illuminations first saw my work after I captured their Christmas lighting scheme on behalf of Trinity Walk themselves. They loved the images and commissioned me to shoot a set for them and have done for the last 4 years! The scheme at Trinity Walk was slightly different this year with one of the giant reindeer being replaced by a sleigh scene and also more lights along the main mall. Once again, I nipped into town at dusk to be there for blue hour and, as always with an outdoor scheme, it’s a mad dash to get round trying to capture all the shots in that short time slot.

Wakefield Commercial Photographer: The Ridings, Wakefield

Back on home turf as a Wakefield commercial photographer for the shoot of the Christmas lights in the Ridings. This is the first year that MK Illuminations have decorated this small shopping centre and I think most folks are in agreement that these have been the best decorations for a long while. As there is a lot of glass in the roof, I was on site for sunset in case I need a royal blue sky as a backdrop along the main mall and atrium. Because the decorations on the upper mall drop through the open areas into the lower mall, it makes life easier for me as it means I am shooting level and also down on the decorations. This is much better than having to shoot upwards.

Commercial photographer Yorkshire: Trinity Square, Gateshead

Commercial photographer Yorkshire: Trinity Square in Gateshead was to be my last port of call outside of Yorkshire before Christmas and, although only a small square in the city centre, it proved to be an enjoyable shoot. All of the decorations here were external so it meant shooting at the blue hour, outside and without the problems of artificial lighting usually present in the malls.  I was onsite in plenty of time but a very strong wind was blowing and I was pretty worried that there would be problems with vibration of the camera during long exposures. Shooting in the twilight with small apertures and low ISO means shutter speeds of several seconds so the camera has to be rock steady. I shot in live view for most of the images because the mirror is locked up at this point lessening vibration from mirror slap. The use of a very expensive but sturdy tripod and a cable release was also essential in my fight against the blur gremlins.

Yorkshire commercial photographer: EK, East Kilbride

Yorkshire commercial photographer: It was only a short jop from Glasgow down to East Kilbride for an overnight stay in readiness to shoot the lights at EK, East Kilbride’s major shopping mall. I’ve been to many shopping malls for shoots but EK is by far the biggest I’ve ever been in! I must have walked miles in that place as I dashed between different sections to get the images. As well as a vast atrium and long corridors there was even an ice skating rink! I managed to get down to Hamilton from here and mop up a shoot at the Regent Centre, a small town centre mall in the suburbs of East Kilbride, before heading off home.

West Yorkshire Commercial Photographer: Christmas lights, St Enoch’s, Glasgow

West Yorkshire commercial photographer: After an overnight stop in Dundee at the amazing Balmuirfield House B&B (what an fantastic find!), I headed down to Glasgow to shoot the St Enoch’s shopping mall. St Enoch’s is right in the heart of Glasgow and the square was very busy with Christmas shoppers and had a great vibe to it. As usual, I was outside at the blue hour for the external shots, trying to capture the large reindeer just inside the main entrance, then it was back inside and dash round the mall looking for the shots that would include daylight. After this, it was a much more steady jaunt round capturing the internals, grotto and giant reindeer that MK Illuminations had erected. This was a great lighting scheme.

West Yorkshire commercial photographer: Aberdeen Christmas Lights

West Yorkshire commercial photographer: After a good night’s sleep in the B&B and a hearty Scottish Breakfast, I spent the day around the Ythan estuary with the big lenses looking for wildlife before heading over to the first of three shopping malls in Aberdeen. I was up here to photograph the Christmas lighting schemes for MK Illuminations at Bonn Accord, St Nicholas and Trinity shopping malls. I decided to shoot at Trinity first and was on site at around 3.30pm ready for the blue hour. There’s just a window of around 20-30minutes where the sky is just perfect for night photography of Christmas lights, after this the sky goes black and the photography is less successful. Because of the limited window to shoot, I tend to arrive early and work out if there are any outdoor lights or glass atriums as these need to be done at the perfect time. Lights along internal corridors can be done at any time. Following Trinity, I photographed in the Bonn Accord and St Nicholas centres before heading off to Glasgow on the second leg of my Scottish tour.
