Diving Kingfisher shoot

Spent the day in the hide trying to photograph diving kingfisher and to say they’re quick is an understatement! I managed a few images that I’m pleased with but due to the low light I had to shoot at a really high ISO which is never good despite what the camera manufacturers say! For the shoot, I used the legendary Nikkor 200 f/2 VR lens which I prefocused and shot in manual mode in the hope of getting at least a few birds in the frame. There’s a lot more shots from this session over on my nature website at Wildscenes.

Glamour photographer West Yorkshire: A portfolio shoot for Hollie

Glamour photographer West Yorkshire: Hollie came over to the studio after finding my website while looking for a photographer to update her portfolio. She models as a sideline to her day job and has several shoots with local photographers who have given her images for her model book but they are not really up to the mark. Hollie sent me some of the images before she came over and to be honest, I wouldn’t have guessed it was the same person! None of the photos did her any justice at all. The problem these days, in all fields of photography, is that there are many people out there who have come to photography since the age of digital and are just clicking away without understanding exposure and lighting and they have a ‘fix it in Photoshop’ mentality. If you are looking for high quality images for your portfolio, then choosing a photographer that understands how to use light and create great images in camera can really be a huge benefit to your career. You are far more likely to be successful in getting modeling jobs if you have a dozen fabulous images in your portfolio rather than lots of selfies or low quality images.

if you would like a fabulous portfolio shoot, then just give me a call on 01924 229800 or send an email via the contact form above. You can visit my glamour website Vervestudio for more information and I can guarantee you some fabulous images. Here is just a very small selection of the ones I shot for Hollie.

A fashion and boudoir shoot for Sylvie

Sylvie was looking for a Wakefield fashion & portrait photographer when she came across my website and decided immediately to book in for a shoot. Her nerves at the outset were pretty obvious to me but we began with some high quality headshots created with my standard beauty lighting against a dark background. I followed this up with some headshots against a white background, created by shooting straight into a Bowens stripbox. After a fashion session on a black sweep we moved on to shoot some tasteful boudoir before finishing with more fashion at the French doors. The latter is a favourite of mine – I love creating the warm sunlight effect with a couple of 800w redheads and I’m pretty sure I am the only photographer round these parts doing this kind of lighting :¬)

To book me for your fashion or boudoir shoot, just call the studio on 01924 229800 or send me a mail through the contact pages above.

Yorkshire wildlife photographer: Golden eagles in Spain

Golden eagles in Sierra Espuna

The Christmas break was followed by an intense period of editing of all the lighting photographs I’d been shooting leading up to Christmas and also creating and designing a wedding album. I needed to tie up all my loose ends so I could don my Yorkshire wildlife photographer hat and jet off to Murcia in Spain to photograph golden eagles. Wildlife photography has always been my passion and it’s how I got started in photography and ultimately led on to my becoming a professional commercial photographer. We flew from Gatwick to Murcia as none of the airlines seem to publish flights in January from more local airports but it was not too much of a hassle. Once in Spain, we spent a couple of long days in hides high in the Sierra Espuna photographing these magnificent birds and you can read all about it and watch the video over on my wildlife photography website – Wildscenes

Headshots for job applications

Magda came across my site while looking for a West Yorkshire portrait photographer and loved what she saw and booked in. The brief was to shoot Magda cabin crew style including headshots, full length shots and three quarter shots. Magda has applied to train as cabin crew for Emirates Airways and need these shots to accompany her application. She also needed casual shots of herself for the application to give the interview panel an idea of what she looks like when not in uniform. The brief was to shoot the uniform images on a white seamless but the other shots could be on any background, so we used mid-grey, barley and also some outdoor shots. Here is a small selection of what we got on the day. To book me for your actor headshots, musician headshots or cabin crew headshots, just call the studio on 01924 229800.

Wakefield Cathedral Christmas card shoot

As a Wakefield commercial photographer, I done a couple of commissions for Wakefield Cathedral photographing the choir at the start of the choir’s year. Today I was on site to photograph the choir for the cathedral Christmas card 2015. The cathedral marketing team had been very disappointed with the shot used on the 2014 card which was chosen from photographs sent in by the public as part of a 365 day photo project and decided this year to shoot something specifically for the card. I was asked to photograph some of the choir in front of the Christmas trees in the cathedral before they were removed. The choir master asked for volunteers to come during their festive break especially for the shoot and the response was good. In fact a little too good as there were more than I’d envisaged being in my shot. I’d thought about doing an intimate, candle lit shot of around three choristers but as they’d all made an effort, we shot with all those that turned up and afterwards, shot some individual portraits as a thank you.
