Adam & Laura at Wentbridge House Hotel

After last week’s pre wedding shoot, I was back with Laura and Adam again but this time for their wedding celebrations at Wentbridge House Hotel and what a day for wedding photos! Adam and Laura were married in Florida two weeks ago and today couldn’t have been a bigger contrast weather wise at least! Blue skies, low sun and snow on the ground – awesome!  The day started at lunchtime with an intimate family meal for those who had been at the wedding in Florida and after this everyone donned their wedding gear for the photoshoot before the guests arrived at 6pm for the wedding celebration meal.  The light was just superb and Laura was a real sport bearing the sub-zero temperatures to frolick in the snow in a backless dress for the wedding photos. We shot as much as we could in the grounds before having to retreat so that Laura could get some of her normal colour back :¬)  Here are a few shots which I hope give a flavour of the day. Thanks for getting out there Laura, you rock!

Corporate shoot: The Danwood Group Ltd

Last week I was commissioned by Lincoln based office supply firm, The Danwood Group, to shoot some headshots and team images of the northern sales teams for some brochure work and today I was on site doing just that. I decided to shoot the team photos outside and incorporate the company logo before moving indoors to shoot individual headshots. Outside the building I hit the guys with a small speedlight from about 20ft to lift the colour and add some punch to the fairly dull light, warming the flash slightly with a 1/4 CTO . I’m always amazed how much light these small flashes will throw and they’re great for jobs like this where I have to work rapidly within limited timescales and don’t have an assistant to rig up the studio flash for me.

Indoors, I used pretty much the same idea which was to include some corporate identity in some of the photos but at the same time vary the images. Lighting indoors in modern offices is always tricky due to the masses of fluorescent lights peppering the ceilings! Our eyes automatically adjust to this lighting and colour correct the scene but the camera really picks up the ghoulish green glow that these lights give off. Ideally, I’d always kill fluorescents and then shoot with flash but when there are lots of other folks working in the office its not always possible, so I gelled the flashes with FLGs and then adjusted the white balance – this just means that now, all light sources are the same colour temperature.  Once balanced, its a case of  popping on a softbox and using a snooted bare flash for accent and snagging the shots.

Adam and Laura pre wedding shoot

Adam and Laura just arrived back in the UK yesterday from a two week trip to the USA where they’d tied the knot on a beach in Florida and it was straight into the pre-wedding meeting and photoshoot ahead of next Saturday’s celebrations at Wentbridge House Hotel. I was expecting a few complaints about the weather from the couple after sunny Florida but they didn’t seem to mind the rawness of the day, at least there was none of the howling winds and rain that we’ve had of late. Often these very overcast conditions seem to amplify the colours and in the end I think we got a few good images from the shoot :¬)  Many more images here than I normally post, but hey! We got some great stuff which I hope to repeat next Saturday!

Lighting demo with Maddy

Tonight I did a lighting demo at Wakefield Camera Club and took along Maddy, sporting a new redhead look, as the model. I kept things simple and showed a lighting set up that can be easily achieved with a couple of speedlights at home – basically a big light source to the front of the model and a small light source to act as a rim light and seperate Maddy’s hair from the background. The beauty of using Maddy as a model is that she is confident and needs little direction, so even the most novice photographer should get a great portrait shot.

Harry & Claire “Celebrate the dress shoot”, Brimham Rocks

Harry & Claire were married on a hot, tropical beach in Barbados earlier in the year but have since decided they would like to try the wedding outfits on one more time, this time in the chill of the British winter! Although I wasn’t fortunate enough to have been flown out to Barbados to shoot their wedding, I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of shooting them in the UK –  ‘Celebrate the Dress’ style. The Celebrate the Dress is my name for what the Americans call ‘Trash the Dress’ and although I’m more than willing to photograph any bride trashing her dress, I tend to find most brides look at me in horror if I suggest a ‘Trash’ shoot, so I changed the name to be less threatening and bit more serene.

I decided to take the couple to Brimham Rocks for the shoot, although we nearly faltered at the last minute due to the uncertainties of the British weather, but in the end we committed to going despite the low temperatures and cloud cover. I would have really loved some low winter sun to bath the couple in warm, orange light but it wasn’t to be. The weak milky sunshine was ideal though and we did get a couple of brief sunny spells for a few minutes at a time. Using some off camera flash balanced with daylight or even slightly overpowering daylight, I created an almost studio-like scenes with crisp lighting on the couple setting them off against the winter sky. Claire was especially brave, bearing up well against the chill winter wind and temperatures of around 5 degrees though she did have leggings and boots on under the dress while Harry on the other hand, was simply in his lightweight beach suit! Here’s a few photos as a taster, maybe more to come in the week if I have a bit of spare time in what is an outrageously busy schedule at the moment. Great fun guys, hope you like the pictures.
