Steve & Jane at Hollins Hall Hotel

A winter wedding can throw up any combination of weather from rain to snow or even, as we had to day, mild and bright conditions, perfect for wedding photography! Jane and Steve were married at Hollins Hall, Baildon today and despite an ominous looking sky to begin with, the weather turned out great and with only a minor chill to the air we were able to get outside for the photos. The ground was pretty wet, however, and I have to admit to being wet through and covered in mud by the time I’d finished rolling in the brambles and lying on the lawn for the best angles (this is why I will never turn up to a wedding dressed like one of the guests!) but it was worth it for me as a low shooting point can yield some great results and illiminate distractions (read parked cars!) in the background. We were slightly unfortunate that, just as we began with the wedding couple photos, the sun dipped behind a large bank of grey cloud never to be seen again but with a bit of fill from a speedlight softened with a large softbox, we came away with some keepers :¬)

Communication breakdown!

I was reminded of the old Led Zeppelin song ‘communication breakdown’ today as I set off to Morpeth with a spring in my step and my mobile phone on the car roof! I heard the thud as it left the car and I slowed down but had no idea what it was until the hands free set complained it had lost comms with the HTC phone. I suddenly realised the calamity but by then I was at least 2 miles down the road! I did a J-turn at the gates of Nostell Priory and headed back in a cloud smoke and burning rubber but it was too late, the inevitable had happened and several other cars had tested the durability of the HTC Desire and it had failed miserably! It lay in the gutter looking like a piece of roadkill and the battery looked like a chewed up toffee! Until you lose your mobile phone with 8 years worth of contacts, recent texts with work requests and all sorts of other stuff, you’ll never know how much you rely on it!  I can honestly say it ruined my day!

Sanderson’s Arcade, Morpeth

I headed north to Morpeth today to the very picturesque Sanderson’s Arcade where MK Illuminations have some really wonderful lights installed. The Santa sleigh with reindeer in the main precinct is the centre piece but the lights adorning the shops are spectacular as are all the swags and drapes along the mall. Unlike Leeds’ St John’s centre where I was nearly bowled over by the crowds, Sanderson’s was quite tranquil and felt really rather Christmasy!
Still chasing Christmas lights,

Leeds St John’s Centre lights

Sheffield yesterday today Leeds for the lights in the St John’s centre. This was more difficult to shoot due to low ceilings and flourescent lighting which is always a battle to overcome, especially as there are two different light sources because the Christmas lights are tungsten so the white balance is tricky in these cases. Light levels themselves are also a challenge and its easy to see from the motion blur that I was shooting low, usually around 1/6 to 4 second exposures! Anyways, we managed some images and here are a few from the day.

Sheffield Crystal Peaks lighting

Straight from this morning’s dog photoshoot to Shefield’s Crystal Peaks shopping centre to capture more Christmas lights images for MK Illuminations. The main entrance at dusk made for some great images as did the centre piece over the main atrium. Here are a few shots from the session.
