Leeds Town Hall interiors

After a heavy weekend of weddings, pre-weddings and boudoir shoots, I headed off to Leeds first thing this morning to shoot some interiors of Leeds Civic Hall and Leeds Town Hall for a commercial commission. It was another baking day too – very unusual this year to have almost three days of sun – so I was boiled alive after carting the gear across Leeds for the shoot! Fortunately, all the pre-planning and sorting out access paid off and I was straight into the chambers in the Civic Hall which were ok, but nowhere near the grandeur of the Victoria concert hall over in the Town Hall! I used the trusty 24mm PC-E lens for many of the shots but even that couldn’t capture the whole scene despite all its tilt and shift movements, so I resorted to the 14-24mm f/2.8 to get really wide for some of the shots but the downside is distortion of the verticals. Here are a couple of images as I have some other edits to do and CDs to get out to clients before I head off to Holland for a well earned break for 7 days!

Pre-wedding: Russell & Anna The Kyte Hotel, Darrington

A last minute pre-wedding meeting with Russell and Anna ahead of their early August wedding at Darrington Church and the Kyte Hotel, Darrington. I’d suggested meeting them at Newmillerdam but I arrived there at 4pm straight from a boudoir shoot in Huddersfield to find the place was jam packed with people as it was the first sunny day in ages! There wasn’t a single spot in either car park so, once I’d found Russell and Anna, we headed up to the top end of Newmillerdam and only just managed to park there! The light was harsh in the woods with heavy dappled light giving me all sorts of lighting nightmares and, as I was without my trusty lighting assisstant, I had to make the best of a bad situation. Still, we came up with a few images and at least it gave Anna and Russell a taste of what its like to be in the limelight and we had a good laugh so I think we should do ok on the day if the weather holds. The wedding pictures will follow close on the heels of this post!

Excite Clothing dress shoot

Excite were back again today to shoot some plus size dresses aimed at the girl about town to wear on a night out. So, after shooting the catalog shots in the studio, we headed to a bar in central Leeds to get some impact shots of Jenna in the dresses. The first shot we did was the most difficult to set up as the lighting in the bar was very low key with bright flourescent purple/pink spotlights – looks great to the human eye but flash will always overpower and obliterate this kind of lighting. Sure enough the test shot had Jenna lit rather nicely but the rest of the room was just lit by flash and all the purple lighting and ambient light had disappeared. The way round this, is to base the exposure on the ambient light and then bring in the flash on the subject and this usually means a high ISO and low shutter speed combined with the flash – a technique I use a lot at weddings during the first dance. This combo captures all the ambient lighting but the trade off is shooting very slow shutter speeds which will amplify any camera shake and also introduce motion blur and ghosting on the subject. All the images in the bar were shot hand held at around 1/20 and ISO 800-1000 but with careful holding of the camera, we managed to get the shots! I used three 500w monoblocs for the lighting with additional gelled speedlights for the bar shots to put light behind the model.

Katie & Jon pre-wedding: Holmfield Arms

Katie and Jon get married next week at St Botolph’s Church, Knottingley before heading on to the newly refurbished Holmfield Arms at Thornes in Wakefield, so this was a last minute meet-up and pre-wedding shoot ahead of the big day. I’ve been meaning to sort out a pre-wedding meet for ages with these two but so much work and weekends full of weddings meant I kept getting side tracked! However, we managed it today and met up in lovely summer sunshine at Pontefract Castle where the quiet grounds were ideal for a shoot without too much attention. I sensed both Katie and Jon were a little apprehensive about the shoot but once we got underway they soon got into the swing of it. My creative juices weren’t on top form as yesterday was the first Saturday I’ve had off in weeks, so I ended up at a friends in York where we sampled most of his single malts, including a rare and vintage Bowmore from Islay :¬o However, I think we got some great images from the shoot and if the weather is like this next weekend for Katie and Jon’s wedding, we should get some good stuff for the album!

Hanson Bricks: Student village Bradford

I nipped over to Bradford today to complete my outstanding commission for Hanson to shoot the sustainable student village at Bradford University. The sun was warm and the grounds deserted so it was quite a peaceful shoot and the campus seemed very pleasant. The coloured green and grey panels worked well against the brick works and I just wandered around looking for quirky angles as well as shooting technical architectural shots with the PC-E lens (which is an awesome tool!). I like the shots where I can juxtapose the bricks against the architecture in the background as much as anything and also shooting upwards with an extreme wide angle to get some odd angles that I hope give a sense of height and scale.
