West Yorkshire Boudoir photographer: Adama

Adama came over for a portfolio shoot today mainly to do a mix of fashion and boudoir which we shot on location to give us a good mix of sets to go with a large variety of clothes and wigs that she’d brought along for the shoot. The wigs were amazing and changed the look of Adama entirely as she went from 70s Afro style to a short crop similar to Halle Berry!  We had a great shoot and came up with some splendid images for her but she is lacking the confidence to show some of the boudoir shots to the world, though I don’t know why as we got some super shots. Here’s a flavour of what we did.

To book me for your boudoir, fashion or glamour shoot, just call the studio for a chat on 01924 229800. The shoots are fun and relaxed with superb images guarranteed!

Olympus OMD field test with Damian McGillicuddy

I went over to Chester today to meet up with Damian McGillicuddy at his studio to have a play with the Olympus OMD digital camera. Back in the day, Olympus were one of the leading camera systems and always coming up with fresh ideas and I was a both a great fan and a user of their systems, cutting my photographic teeth on the iconic OM2 and the stunningly crafted OM4Ti which I always remember being labelled as “reassuringly expensive”. The small body sizes and vast array of lenses, including the most incredible macro gear and TTL flash which was way ahead of the game, were all things that endeared me to Olympus camera system but alas, they came unstuck when Nikon and Canon introduced auto focus to the market and Olympus could somehow never build AF into the OM system and their demise as a lead player began.

I’ve long since left Olympus but remember the days fondly and, although I’ve heard a few good things about their phoenix like rise into the digital age, I somehow never considered the Olympus system could ever be what it once was. Strangely enough though, the Big Dog himself is now Olympus’ main evangelist, singing the praises of the OMD loudly from his pulpit in Chester and so it was I went over to have a play for myself. I had in mind that being sponsored by Olympus, it would be case of ‘he would say that wouldn’t he?’ but in truth, Damian has shelved his Nikons and is shooting some high calibre images with this diminutive piece of kit and for big name players too such as B&Q. I have to confess to thinking that a micro 4/3 camera with its tiny sensor would be no match for the full frame Leviathans of the  digital world, especially with the latest wave of 24-36million pixel sensors and claims of their being as good as medium format cameras, so it was with some indifference that I loaded my SD card into the tiny camera in my hands and took a few shots of Damian’s model. However, on looking at the image on the back of the camera, and especially when I zoomed in to 14x to inspect the quality, I was utterly blown away by the quality and sharpness of the image. I took a few more as if it were some kind of fluke but no, just as sharp, almost cruelly so with every hair, minor blemish and tiny skin flaw showing up tack sharp and beautifully resolved by the 45mm f/1.8 lens (equivalent to a 90mm in 35mm terms).

I know I only had a brief go with the camera and I’d love to punish it on a professional shoot to see how it stands up to the task and I did think the menus looked overly complicated and the small size meant that it might be a bit fiddley for my chubby fingers, but I sure did enjoy using it. I felt like Clarkson getting into one of those tiny Airfix-like kit cars on the TG track only to be blown away by the unexpected power and speed!  I’m not saying I am going to sell all my Nikon equipment forthwith, I’ve invested too much to do that, but I’m sorely tempted not to buy that other 24mp DSLR just now and instead, invest in an OMD to sit along side my current line up and use it as a very high quality ‘go everywhere’ camera. I do suspect though, that I would end up using a whole lot more than I intended!

Here are a few shots from the session, including a crop at 100% of an unedited JPEG.

Glamour portfolio shoot: Kayleigh

Kayleigh drove dowm from Blackpool today for a glamour portfolio shoot with me as she’s looking to become a full time glamour and promotions model and realised she needed a really strong portfolio to help her career. Having had a portfolio shoot previously with The London School of Modelling (and paying a hefty price for the shoot!!), she has realised the images are not really up to scratch and definately will not make her stand out from other girls at castings! So, she decided to make the journey down to my studio in Wakefield for another portfolio shoot.  As well as my studio, I have several locations I use for various shoots depending on what look I’m after. My studio has a large space where we can shoot on various infinity curves and it also has a great bathroom, spiral staircase and private gardens but I do like to vary my locations and it keeps me creative rather than shooting in the same sets each time. For this shoot, I decided not to shoot infinity curves as she’d already done that but instead to shoot some good bedroom sets on location.  Once we got past her initial nerves, Kayleigh relaxed and really enjoyed the shoot and began to loosen up and move for the camera. Modelling is not as easy as many people think and being a good natural model is a gift or a skill that certainly takes time to master. The key is to let yourself go and not to feel shy in front of the lens, simply standing in one pose with head cocked to one side isn’t going to create stunning images. Kayleigh certainly became more fluid as the shoot progressed and I think it shows in the images :¬)

Newborn baby photographer: Billy’s first photoshoot

Sarah was booked in for a baby bump photoshoot a few weeks ago but about 4 days before the shoot, Billy put in an early appearance and put paid to the bump shoot. Today though, Sarah and Billy dropped by the studio and made it a newborn photoshoot instead. He’s only  4 weeks old and we had all sorts of ideas for him in terms of poses, but most of them relied on him being asleep which he usually is during the afternoon. Not to day though! He was wide awake through the whole shoot and determined to make it hard for the photographer! Still, we managed a few shots and he is scheduled to come back in another 4 weeks and we will try him again with more success hopefully!

Actor headshots for Peter

Peter came over from Huddersfield for a portfolio shoot to help with his aspirations to become an actor. Currently in his gap year, Peter has studied drama at college and is now applying to acting academies in New York and London as well as local venues and is also getting small parts as an extra which is why he now needs a portolio to present to casting agents. We began with some classic headshots before moving through a whole raft of outfits and different backdrops. Peter is a marshal arts expert so the obvious choice was for some shots in his combat gear but we also did suits, casual, shorts and swimwear before finishing with some shots using ‘creature eye’ contact lenses and ended with some shots using his guitar as a prop. All in all we got some great images for his portfolio and many different looks by changing the lighting styles around.

To book me for your headshots portfolio, just call the studio on 01924 229800.

Bagden hall wedding: Donna & James

Not often I shoot a Monday wedding but today I was back with Donna & James for their big day at Bagden Hall. The weather was just perfect with a bit of autumn sunshine for much of the day, just clouding up towards the end of the afternoon but nothing to spoil the day. Donna has a beauty salon in Walton adjoining the Visions hair salon and that’s where we caught up with her and the bridesmaids for the prep shots – very handy when all your friends and colleagues are beauticians and hair stylists! The salon gave me some unusual locations to work with for the bridal shots once Donna and the girls were ready and I used a couple of speed lights and salon leaflets or some MacGyver style strobist lighting :¬) With Donna’s mum breaking her leg just before the wedding and one of the bridesmaids, Janine, falling downstairs and splitting her chin open just before the wedding, I was kind of panicking about what would go wrong next. However, the worst thing that happened was the registrar forgetting about the reading by Nicola! At least no-one else got hurt, though I came close to having a punch-up with the local farmer but that’s a different story :¬o Here are just a few as we are having a grand showing at the after wedding shin dig on Friday when the majority of Donna and James’ friends will be present.
