Wakefield fashion photographer: Alice

Alice was in the studio today to shoot a fashion portfolio as she’s thinking of having a go at promotions and commercial modelling after being contacted by an agency. After trawling the net for a photographer, she kindly chose me :¬) The brief was that Alice wanted some fashion inages on a plain sweep and also some commercial/lifetyle images wit just a few lingerie shots for herself. For the plain sweep I used white but pitched it at around 25% grey as I think this is a great colour for fashion and went well with the couple of outfits we shot. We then moved through various sets to shoot some images with a lazy feel to them as well as some edgey fashion and a bit of glamour. A great shoot and Alice was a pleasure to work with and I’m hoping she likes what we shot for the portfolio.

studio lighting demo: One light workshop

Castleford camera Club kindly invited me over to their club tonight to show them a few different portraiture lighting styles. Just to spice up the challenge, the club asked that I only use their lighting equipment and they also supplied the models from a dance academy in Garforth. As always, I like to keep things simple so that any lighting I do can easily be replicated at home using speedlights and simple reflectors. So, that’s what I did to start with, one light and a reflector for some classic beauty lighting using Emily as the model and then by using just a single head, I made full use of the inverse square law and a bit of feathering to get some beautiful black and white images before setting everything back up for the members to shoot the beauty headshots with addition of a soft hair light. While some of the members photographed Emily, I then did a set-up using a continuous light and balanced the shots with ambient for the headshots of Catherine and Addison. Continuous lights are de rigueur with a lot of photographers at the moment but this was my first time working with them. They lack the power of flash for me and seem less versatile but I did my best with them. Won’t be rushing out to buy any just yet though, my trusty Bowens 500s are just fine for now.

A few shots here of the three models and I’m guessing I just found my latest muse :¬)

Night Train

I was invited along to a night train shoot by a friend of mine who’s got a passion for steam trains and, on paper, it sounded to have the potential for a good shoot. The evening was organised by a bunch of railway enthusiasts at East Lancs Railway and they’d organised for an engine to be ticking over at the platform with a vintage PO van alongside and, for added effect, they had a few re-enactors on the platform in period costume. The whole thing looked quite authentic but in terms of photography, it was harder than it sounded. Firstly, the event was attended by around 30 railway enthusiast who aren’t photographers and are just interested in snaps of the train, and secondly, although the guys organising it had done a tremendous job, they too were not photographers which meant the lighting could have been better at the very least. The shoot was arranged to be shot in darkness but for me, it would have been much better shooting in the ‘blue hour’ – the twilight just before darkness while the sky is royal blue. This would allow for more detail in the shots and much more vibrant colours. Once the sky gets dark, it’s really difficult to get detail in he shadow while not blowing the highlights and without separation between the train and the night sky, the images lose impact. I managed to get a few shots during the blue hour as they were setting up but I was faced with the ‘railway enthusiasts’ wandering all over the place! The night shots I mostly converted to black and white as it handles the shadows better. I’m pleased with some of the shots but I would have liked to have lit the train less fiercely and also had it not as far forward in the station. Maybe I’ll have to organise a shoot myself just for photographers :¬)

Leeds newborn baby photographer: Charlie

Well, after hanging on for a while, Charlie finally put in an appearance but given the size of Sharon’s bump when she was in the studio a couple of weeks ago, I was suprised it wasn’t me delivering him! Sharon had intended to bring him in when he was just a couple of days old but due to complications, she ended up staying in hospital for a week but today, at 2 weeks old, he was still cute and easy to work with :¬) However, 2 weeks old and way more hair than me is just not fair :¬\  We just did a couple of shots of Charlie in a wicker basket and I love the results. These newborn shoots are hard to do; it takes ages to set them up and get just the right shot so, although we don’t get hundreds of shots, what we do get are a gorgeous keepsake of your baby’s first few days in the world. To book your newborn baby shoot in a warm, fully kitted out professional studio, just call 01924 220800.

Wakefield newborn baby photographer: Jenson

Lee and Donna were given one of my gift vouchers at Christmas to use for a photoshoot of their choice and they decided to wait until after baby was born and do a newborn shoot. So, today they came to the studio with five week old Jenson and we set to work to get them some great images for an album and wall art. Newborn shoots are really at their best when baby is around 3-5 days old as they are very malliable and easier to work with, at 5 weeks they start to have a mind of their own and sometimes resit the attempts at posing. However, Jenson was really sleepy on arrival so we got a couple of cutie images straight away and then did some low key lighting of them as a family so I could produce some of my ‘noir’ style black and white images. Here’s a taster if what we got. To book your newborn baby shoot in Wakefield just call the studio on 01924 229800

Wakefield maternity photographer: Stacey

Stacey and Alex came by the studio today for a bump shoot 8 weeks ahead of the big day. With a perfect shaped bump, no stretch marks and great skin it was easy to get some great images and very little need of my Photoshop guru skills :¬) I used the white curve for some high key shots and then mainly used a black sweep for the rest of the shots. I think the low key, ‘noir’ style images really suit the bump shoots. Here’s a selection from the shoot.
