Wakefield commercial photographer: Unique Wakefield

The shoot for Unique Wakefield is coming to a close and I am down to the last few shops left on the brief that I still have to do plus a few late additions. So today I caught up with Peter Jones’ China, Created in Yorkshire  and Wool ‘n’ Stuff to shoot a selection of images that capture each of the businesses and what they have to offer. I really like these little montages which give a flavour of everything that each of the businesses is about and I think that Unique Wakefield do to and have decided that this is how they will present the images in the magazine and on the website. Unique Wakefield is a collaboration of many of the small, independent shops and restaurants in Wakefield that have come together to promote themselves and show their individuality and present a unique shopping experience in Wakefield. They will have a website and printed guide out soon, though you can pick up the current guide at many of the participating shops.

Wakefield Commercial photographer: Heath Tea Rooms

Had a lovely session ay Heath tea rooms today with hosts Gill and Martin as I photographed their entry for the Unique Wakefield magazine. The weather was balmy and folks were outside enjoying super salad lunches and afternoon teas while I busily worked round them. The cottage garden of the tearooms was superb and in bloom and the whole place had a real feel of idyllic Yorkshire life and hospitality. Well worth a visit if you’re out that way, better still make a day of it and go specially for a treat and to sample good home made food at it’s best.

Wedding photographer Nostell Priory: Andy & Suzy

After last night’s damp shoot, it was nice to be back in the sun again for Andy & Suzy’s pre-wedding shoot at Brodsworth Hall. Andy and Suzy are getting married at Nostell Priory the day after Nicola and Ben who’s shoot I did last night and who are also getting married at Nostell Priory. So, a back to back shoot there for me in July which is great fun. We met up at  Brodsworth Hall and the gardens were looking spectacular – definitely worth a visit if you’ve never been here. We made the most of the summer sun before a short sharp shower had us running for the café for shelter, a cappuccino and a chance to go through the plans for their day. The shower went as quickly as it came and we managed a few more shots in front of the house as we headed back to the cars in time for Suzy to head off to her trial hair day. See you at Nostell in a few weeks :¬)

Nostell Priory Wedding photographer: Nicola & Ben

Despite the heavy downpours throughout the day and the real threat of a wet Friday evening, I met up with Nicola & Ben as we’d arranged to go through their wedding day plan. We met at Kirkstall Abhey which was a mutually convenient place and had a quick shoot in the dark gloom before the rain came again. Nicola and Ben are marrying at Nostell Priory early next month, a great venue for me as it’s just on my doorstep and it’s a location I am very familiar with. I’m hoping for better weather on the day though! Unbelievable to think that only a week ago I was in this same location with Charlotte and Cristian for their pre-wedding shoot and we were being baked alive! The British weather certainly is a challenge for wedding photographers!

wedding photographer Treasurer’s House: Alan & Lucy

Well, I’ve finally got round to the blog entry for Alan & Lucy who were married a couple of weeks ago on the Friday before Spring Bank but if you track back on the blog, you will see I only managed a sneak preview as I went to Scotland for half term the very next day. Coming back to a whole raft of shoots has meant I’m only just now getting round to the edits but here is a selection from the day. The weather leading up to their wedding was glorious and the day after was tropical, but on the day we had rain, lots of rain, which hampered the photo shoot a bit and meant we had to mostly work indoors. That’s always a challenge in a medieval building that is still only as bright as it was in the middle ages when it was lit by candles! Still, we gave it our best and fortunately the rain had eased off for the walk round from the Treasurer’s House to St William’s College for the reception.

Wakefield glamour photographer: Rebekah

Rebekah came over from Manchester for a glamour and fashion shoot to add to her portfolio and hopefully kick start her modelling career. We had a session in the new white corner I’ve had built and this was the first time I have used it since it was built 6 or 7 weeks ago! I loved it! The advantage it has over the white sweep I would normally use is that it is solid and allows the model to lean on the wall for support. Having some kind of prop, even something simple like the side of the white corner, makes the model relaxed and feel less vulnerable than the infinity curve, especially for a first time model like Becky. We shot both fashion and lingerie in the white section before moving on to shoot more lingerie in a couple of other sets before finishing off in the summer sun in the back garden. At least, it felt summery when I lit up the overcast day with a monobloc kitted out with a huge softbox :¬)

The keen eyed amongst you will notice the difference in facial expression between the first montage and the second montage. Becky definitely looks apprehensive in the first set but see how the nerves disappeared as the shoot progressed and she relaxed more. By the end of the shoot she was really enjoying herself and for me it shows in the images. Less experienced models, not just models but anyone being photographed, tend to be nervous at first but as soon as they realise how relaxed and fun the shoots are, then they relax too and the images flow. Building the rapport with the model is fundamental in getting the shots and as much a skill of the photographer as the lighting and technical side.
