Country wedding at Crowcombe Court

This weekend saw me down in Somerset to shoot Brian and Teresa’s country wedding at Crowcombe Court, a gorgeous venue nestled in the countryside beneath the Quantock Hills. I arrived on the Friday afternoon to scout the venue and to make sure I was down there in time for the wedding and this also allowed me to have a meal and a few drinks with the wedding couple on the evening before the big day. I was really hoping for a some autumn sunshine that would bring out the colours in the autumn trees but despite the beginnings of a glorious sunrise, the day remained cloudy and dull but nevertheless, great for photography.

There were around 60 of Brian and Teresa’s friends and family at the wedding which was just the right amount to fill the venue and make everyone feel part of the big day. It was very much a country wedding with a hunting theme which reflects Teresa’s passion and skill as a countryside wildlife artist. Teresa had made so much of the decorations and details herself, including the cake, and her talents really shone through with everything blending into the setting beautifully. After the ceremony, the couple walked out through an archway of stag’s antlers and while the guests enjoyed canapes and mulled cider, we set about the photos. Star of the show was Brian’s son and best man Alex, who rocked the house with a fabulous speech that he had written completely himself and, for an 11 year old, it was amazing and on par with many of the best man’s speeches that I’ve heard.

Crowcombe Court was a great setting for this wedding and I hope I did it justice with the photos. The wedding flowers were beautifully done by Flowers by Wendy. Here are a few as a sneak preview and for those wanting to see Teresa’s work, head on over to www.teresadavis.co.uk .

21st birthday shoot: Jasmin & friends

party shoot wakefield
A couple of weeks ago, Jasmin booked me for her 21st birthday party shoot with five of her friends at the studio in Wakefield and today was the day of the shoot. They girls were full of beans and really up for the shoot which makes my job an absolute breeze, all I have to do is point the camera in their direction :¬) Jasmin chose four outfit changes for her and the girls including casual, dressy, autumn and summery and, even though we only used the barley infinity curve for most of the shots, I think we got a good selection to go on the CD. As well as group shots, we also did individual headshots using a classic beauty lighting set-up to get some gorgeous portraits that I am sure their mum’s will love. This is just a selection of what we achieved on the day! :¬o

To book me for your birthday party shoot, just call the studio on 01924 229800 for a chat.

West Yorkshire Portfolio photographer: Dan

portfolio photographer West Yorkshire

As a newly qualified fitness instructor, Dan was looking for a West Yorkshire portfolio photographer to create some high quality images that he could use for publicity purposes. Dan found me  via one of my previous blog entries when I’d photographed Callum for his fitness portfolio. Dan wanted much the same kind of thing which was easy enough to do using a combination of white, grey and black backdrops and a couple of monoblocs with various softboxes. In the process of becoming qualified as a fitness instructor, Dan has lost over 4 stones in weight so I reckon he knows what he’s talking about if you are looking for a personal trainer!

Yorkshire Alt model photographer

Alt model photography Wakefield
I took my skills as a Yorkshire alt model photographer down into Derbyshire tonight to do a lighting demo to Bolsover Camera Club. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting steampunk models but Bolsover CC said they would provide a couple of goth models for the shoot that I hadn’t met before so that they could watch me set up the lights and observe how I go about working with someone for the first time. I was not phased by the models, Laura was pretty much an easy shoot and Julie, although wearing a face mask, was still ok as I knew I’d just concentrate the light on the eyes. The biggest challenge came in the form of the room which had ceilings of around 7′ tall which meant I couldn’t get the light as high as I would have liked for the first set with Laura. As I often do when I give a lighting demo, I try and restrict the set-up to using a single light and a reflector to show that lighting doesn’t have to be complicated or flat and that a single light is often enough. It also means, club members can go away and try the techniques themselves with a single speedlight.

“Alternative modelling is a branch of the modelling industry that features models who do not conform to mainstream ideals of beauty. Alternative models are often niche-specific, with a personal style that represents subcultures like goth, burlesque, latex and fetishism. An alternative model may for example be tattooed, pierced, or have distinctively subcultural hair (shaved, dyed a distinctively unnatural colour, mohawk, or in dreadlocks).”

Wakefield portrait photographer: Chris & Monica

Wakefield portrait photographer
Chris and Monica celebrated their silver wedding recently and threw a party for family and friends over at Ossett community centre and unbeknown to them, Nigel, one of their sons, booked a photo shoot for them as a surprise gift. Keen to make the most of the autumn colour, we went ahead with the shoot today, just a few days after the party but in typical fashion the weather turned against us just as we met at Thornes Park for the shoot! However, we persevered and despite the low light and constant threat of rain, we went ahead as planned. Neither Chris or Monica had experienced life as model at a professional photo shoot but they were soon over the initial nerves and awkward feelings as we shot a few candid images using the trusty 70-200mm zoom which gives a really nice working distance. The dull, overcast light really does bring out the best in what’s left of the autumn colours but the gale force winds of late have robbed the trees of most of their autumn splendor. Here are a few images from the shoot and I am sure their album is going to be a fabulous keepsake for the next 25 years :¬)
