West Yorkshire commercial photographer: Halifax bomber night shoot

My experience as a West Yorkshire commercial photographer came in handy tonight as I did a night shoot of ‘Friday 13th’, a WWII Halifax bomber based at the Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington. The shoot was organised for enthusiasts to photograph this fabulous second world war bomber in original surroundings at the air museum which is located on a former RAF base that remains fairly well unaltered from the war years. The event was billed as a night shoot and, having never attended one of these large groups shoots before, I wasn’t expecting to come away with a great many keepers due to numbers of photographers there. It pretty much lived up to what I had imagined it would be and it was difficult to get the shots. I would have done so many things differently with regard to where the plane was positioned and, particularly to how it was lit with arc lights. I would have loved to have had the aircraft to myself and lit it with some studio flash placed specifically to pick out the form and shape rather than flood light the whole thing. However, these events have to be organised so that the majority of photographers can turn up and get a few photos for their collection.

One good thing was that there were good numbers of re-enactors present, all dressed in period gear and really looking the part. For me, as a portrait photographer, these offered some great photo opportunities so I mounted up the 135 f/2 and shot wide open using the defocus control (unique to that lens) to get some lovely shallow DOF. I used only this lens and the tripod mounted 24-70 f/2.8 which I used to get the wide shots of the aircraft for the whole shoot. The less experienced photographers were photographing from the outset but the sky was flat and grey and so I decided to wait until the ‘blue hour’ to get a richer, royal blue sky as a backdrop. I manually bracketed the exposures to give me maximum dynamic range to work with in post, but all the images here are from single exposures.  There were a couple of other aircraft there to be photographed including a DeHavilland Mosquito and a Dakota troop carrier but for me they didn’t really work due to the backgrounds though I may process up one of the mosquito images. Here’s a selection of my favourites.

headshot photographer Wakefieldheadshot and beauty photographer Wakefield: Headshots photographer for Jayanne

Beauty photographer Wakefield: Jayanne is just getting back into modelling after the recent birth of her daughter and decided that she’d like to concentrate on beauty headshots and fashion until her body gets back into shape. So, after my name was recommended by a couple of other models and one of her photographer friends, Jayanne booked in for a shoot. We created a series of stunning beauty portraits using a simple lighting set-up with some very soft lighting from a large octabox which has a quality of light like nothing else. I much prefer the octabox to a beauty dish unless I’m needing a slightly more contrasty light. I then used a 1m square ‘Waefer’ feathered across Jayanne to create a Rembrandt lighting effect for some gorgeous, low key, moody shots before switching to my classic headshot set-up with the light positioned directly overhead, combined with reflectors for shadowless lighting. We ended the session using a hot light mixed with a couple of studio heads fitted with deep reflectors, gridded for tighter control, to create some images with a bit of a swinging 60s appeal. The whole shoot was done using a single prime lens, the Nikkor 135 f/2 DC which is just awesome for a shoot of this style

Wedding photographer Monk Fryston Hall | Monk Fryston Hall wedding photographer

Monk Fryston Hall wedding photographer: Andy and Charlotte

Andy and Charlotte booked me as their Monk Fryston Hall wedding photographer after visiting the studio last year to look at some sample albums. It’s been a while since I photographed a wedding at Monk Fryston Hall so I’m looking forward to it, especially as it’s a May wedding which could be bright and sunny with lots of blossom. Unusually, I did the pre-wedding shoot at the venue as Andy and Charlotte had to be there anyway. Normally, I meet for the pre-wedding session at a neutral venue so that the photography feels different on the big day. Still, we had a laugh and I think we dispelled those photography nerves and I know we’ll get some great images on the big day.

Wakefield glamour photographer: Hollie has another portfolio shoot

Wakefield glamour photographer

Hollie has used me as her go to Wakefield glamour photographer a couple of times now. This time Hollie decided that she’d like some high quality boudoir images in her model book and so I did my best to please :¬) We began with some Hollywood glamour style images in the bedroom set and followed it with a lingerie shoot in the bathroom. My favourite images though were from the back bedroom set which was catching the late afternoon spring sunshine through the wooden Venitian blind. The soft shadows mixed with the warm light made for some super shots and I used mostly natural light and pushed light into the shadows as required with a Profoto reflector. I have to say, though expensive, the Profoto reflectors are really nice to use. We finished with a set against the spiral staircase using a couple of redheads to create a warm ‘evening light’ effect.

Danielle was looking for a Wakefield glamour photographer and came across my website and had no hesitation in booking in for a shoot. Looking for a selection of fashion, casual, portrait and glamour images, Danielle brought a good selection of outfits which allowed us to shoot in various locations in the studio and to get good variety of shots. We started in the white corner with jeans and a T and then moved on to a black sweep for portraits and fashion before heading into the bathroom for the glamour shots. We finished the shoot using the bedroom set as an out of focus backdrop for some faux fur boudoir images.

West Yorkshire Commercial Photographer: Dunelm store opening

West Yorkshire commercial photographer | commercial photographer Leeds & Wakefield | commercial photographer Yorkshire

Wakefield commercial photographer at the Dunelm store opening

Dunelm were looking for a West Yorkshire commercial photographer to cover their new store opening on Cathedral retail Park, Wakefield when they came across my website. After looking at the store opening shots I took for Staples a couple of month’s ago, they had no hesitation in booking me for the shoot. The brief was to photograph the ribbon cutting followed by shots inside the store of shoppers, staff and the different departments. I love this  kind of shoot, it’s very intense and you have to think on your feet and interact really well with the general public, but I love creating portraits on the fly using a single speedlight in a 14″ softbox. The real difficulty is in the store lighting which is a mix of all kinds of different temperature fluorescent and tungsten lighting which is a white balance nightmare!

To book me as your West Yorkshire commercial photographer just call the studio on 01924 229800 to discuss your requirements. To visit Dunelm’s website, click here
