Sharon & Harley return with Samantha, Bradley & Lexie

Sharon and son Harley came to the studio about 18 months ago for a family lifestyle shoot and today they were back in the studio with sister Sam and her kids, Bradley & Lexie.  The aim of the shoot was for a family photo to give as a Christmas present to Sharon & Sam’s parents so we got the group shots in the bag first before shooting a combo of the kids, sisters, and individual portraits.  Here’s a selection from the session, lots more to go at.

To book your family portrait shoot call 01924 229800 or visit the website for details.

Luci & Adam at Allerton Park

What a fabulous sunny autumn day for Luci & Adam’s big day at Allerton Park, North Yorkshire! This certainly is an impressive venue for a wedding but is also a challenge photographically as it is very dark inside the cavernous main hall where the wedding takes place – the shadows just soak up the light even when you throw a bit of flash in the mix along with some outrageously high ISO settings. Due to the chiily temperatures, the drinks were served indoors for the guests, so we did most of the formals indoors in front of the sweeping staircase and in the sumptuous drawing room before heading outside with the bridal party. Following the wedding breakfast, I did a bit of a fashion style shoot with Luci on the staircase and in the main entrance. I love doing this kind of shoot, using just a couple of speedlights to provide the illumnation while making sure the light gets blended with ambient to keep the pictures balanced. It’s amazing how much light these small units can produce when used even at very low power in such a big venue allowing me to produce some really nice creative bridal portraits. It also helps when the bride has some experience in front of the camera and I’ve worked with Luci in my studio on a few occasions in the past so she’s no stranger to the camera :¬)

Wild boar in Bavaria

Just got back from a 4 day trip photographing wild boar in Bavaria. Wildlife has always been my main interest and is what got me into photography in the first place all those years ago. Although I don’t do as much as I used to, I like to keep my hand in still and I had a great time in the splendid forests of south-eastern Germany with three good friends capturing images of these fabulous animals. Wild boar are really very common in Germany, even moving into the suburbs nowadays, but they are very shy and elusive animals and you have to have patience to capture them properly. We were also very fortunate to come across a Ural owl which is a really hard to get species outside of Scandinavia! Anyway, enough of the wildlife – its back to business as usual with a winter wedding at Allerton Park tomorrow. Let’s hope the weather improves :¬\

Jenni & Roy at Hotel St Pierre, Newmillerdam

What a fabulous autumn day for Roy & Jenni’s wedding at Hotel St Pierre, Wakefield today. Plenty of autumn sunshine and of course autumn colour still on the trees, so it was inevitable that we would hit Newmillerdam for some shots of the couple with a backdrop of riotous oranges, browns and yellow-greens from the beech and chestnut trees.  Despite the country park being full of walkers and families out for the day, we still managed to make it appear as if we had it to ourselves and we came away with some really nice images.  Although there was a slight nip in the air, there was still some warmth in the sun but probably nowhere near that of the sun in Mauritius where they are honeymooning!

Off to Germany in the early hours of tomorrow to do some wildlife photography so watch the blog for images of wild boar very shortly, but if you want to book me for your wedding at Hotel St Pierre,  just call 01924 229800 or visit the website.

Rachel & Ben: Cedar Court, Huddersfield

It seems ages since I met Rachel & Ben at their pre-wedding shoot at Nostell Priory earlier in the summer. However, they are immortalised at Nostell as the National Trust used one of my pictures of the couple for the meet and greet hut as you arrive at the parkland. Watch out for Rachel, Ben and buster the dog on the side of the hut. Today though, was the big day and we arrived at Rachel’s parents’ house for the prep shots before heading off to the very picturesque Thornhill parish church for the wedding. Such a shame the vicar was a tyrant and refused to allow any photos at all inside the church! I never understand why they are like that :¬\

The skies went very heavy and we had a small amount of light drizzle just prior to the ceremony, but we managed to do both the formals and some bride and groom shots at the church before heading up to Ainley Top and the Cedar Court Hotel. How different it was up there – being very exposed, the wind whistled around us as we shot a few more images! Ben and Rachel were brave about it and I think we scored some nice images. Here is a small selection, more to come, but its time to charge the batteries and polish the lenses for tomorrow’s wedding at Hotel St Pierre before heading off on a photo assignment in Bavaria for a few days.
