Wakefield fashion photographer: location fashion shoot (Pt.1)

Wakefield fashion photographer: Today’s location fashion shoot was super fun and exciting! Working in a large stately home and having lots of space, atmosphere and elegant backdrops made it very easy to get some images I’m really pleased with. I used Charlene as the model for the first part of the day; she has a lot of experience in the industry and is easy to work with and doesn’t need a lot of direction, plus she had a good range of outfits for the shoot. We began in the long gallery where the early morning light was streaming in through the vast windows that run the length of the building but even so, I used a Profoto B1 head to add some sparkle and even out the highlights. I really enjoyed shooting in the minstrel’s gallery too where the deep red walls added that touch of opulence to the images. A large chimera scrim softened the light and minimised specular highlights and resulted in some really nice images in front of the organ and in the arched doorway of the gallery. We ended up shooting on the impressive sweeping steps to finish the session during the mid-afternoon and again, I used a 500w head to give some nice soft fill to the images.

Newborn baby photographer: Freya

Michele and Paul contacted me while looking for a local newborn baby photographer and after a qucik call, they came to the studio for the shoot with baby Freya who was just two weeks old. Ideally for newborn photography, the child should be under a week old, but due to an infection, it wasn’t possible to bring Freya so soon. However, we managed a good variety of images from the shoot with Freya being fairly co-operative in the end – it’s amazing what a good feed can do :¬) Here is a sample of some of the images we created. Give me a call if you’d like to bring your family down for a shoot.

Portraits and pin-up photography with Sarah

Today was a day of portraits and pin-up photography in the studio with Sarah. Sarah and I had made contact through social media and we’ve had the shoot arranged for a few weeks and today we finally got to work with each other to create some portraits and pin-up style photography. I love Sarah’s look and it worked well for what I had in mind; the combination of colourful tattoos, beautiful eyes and fabulous smile combined with a range of vintage outfits made my job all too easy. I used my Pentax 645z medium format camera for the shoot and the image wuality of the files is truly remarkable – I love this piece of kit. We worked through a few different looks using various sweeps including a dark grey which allows me to drop in a few diffent backgrounds if I want. Here are a few images from the shoot though I have lots more to edit still.

Headshots photographer Wakefield: Steve and Victoria

Headshots photographer Wakefield: Steve and Victoria dropped by the studio this morning to create some headshots for their LinkedIn profiles and also for use on websites and other social media. As ever, I created a series of images on both white and black backgrounds with Victoria changing outfits qucikly and often to create some different looks from business to casual. In addition to headshots, Steve also wanted some business portraits for use on his company website and I achieved this very easily by perching him on an old leather Chesterfield and using a single light to give a low key, Rembrandt style of lighting which I then colour shifted to a cool sepectrum for that edgy modern feel to a classic photo. Here are just a few images from the session.

Aircraft Photography: Avro Lancaster ‘Just Jane’

After a week of editing wedding and commercial images, I needed a bit of a break and fortunately, it came in the form of aircraft photography. I met up with a friend and headed down to Lincolnshire to take part in a nighttime shoot of an iconic World War II bomber – an Avro Lancaster ‘Just Jane’. The event was organised by Timeline Events and I’ve been to a couple of their offerings in the past, including a previous shoot of ‘Just Jane’ a couple of years ago. While I feel the organisers go to an effort to create some amazing scenes, this one was just too over subscribed and was a real bunfight. I’m guessing there must have been approaching 150 photographers crowed in a semi-cricle around the aricraft and it made for an uncomfortable shoot- during the first session, I was so tightly hemmed in I couldn’t even get my camera bag off my back to change lenes! This being the case, I ended up shooting the whole event with a 28-45mm lens on my medium format camera. This lens had been loaned to me by The Flash Centre in Leeds (I highly recommend these guys!) for me to simply try out and so that’s what I did. This is a state of the art lens designed for the Pentax 645Z medium format camera and rocks in at just shy of £5k! However, I have to say, it performed flawlessly and the results of this lens on the 50mp sensor of the Pentax 645z are remarkable. Would I go on another shoot like this? Depends really. There’s no doubt they are a great photo oppurtunity but I wish I could chat with them and suggest changes that would have made this shoot even better.

Falcon Manor wedding photographer: Helen and Tim

I had great fun as a Falcon Manor wedding photographer today as I met up again with Helen and Tim on their big day. Typically, the weather was nothing like the balmy autumn day we enjoyed yesterday in Wakefield, instead we had rain, strong blustery winds and low temperatures but that didn’t stop us from making some great wedding memories! I met up with Helen and the girls at The Anchor Inn near Gargrave where they were stationed ahead of the wedding and, after capturing a few prep shots, we headed on to St Aiden’s Church at Helifield to catch up with Tim and the boys. Despite the damp weather, we managed the groom shots outside in plenty of time before Helen arrived. On exiting the church and getting ready for the confetti shot, the wind managed to whip off Helen’s veil and attempted to get it into the next county, but luckily it wrapped itself around the videographer’s camera briefly giving him a soft focus effect :¬) With the family formals quickly despatched and the rain setting in, we headed off to Falcon Manor, a new venue for me, to get warm and begin the party. This is an amazing place for a wedding and I enjoyed the challenge of shooting in the dimly lit, yet atmospheric, interior when we arrived. However, there was a break in the weather and the rain eased up for a while (though not the wind) and we managed to get outside for some shots of Helen and Tim before heading in for the wedding breakfast. There’s loads of images from this wedding I’d like to show but here are just a few for now.
