Unique Wakefield Guide

Today I began working on a commercial photography shoot for Unique Wakefield, a collection of small independent shops around Wakefield that have come together under a single brand to promote the shopping opportunities within the town centre. The group did a trail leaflet last year which was successful in promoting the participating shops, so this year they decided to go bigger and better and wanted to have a consistency of images through out the marketing and so decide to hire a commercial photographer to do the shoot for them. I had a meeting with Sarah from Jam, a gift shop on Northgate, a couple of months back about the shoot and now its time to get cracking, so it’s been a busy week of shoots. There’s around 30 shops to go at so I will be busy most days for the next couple of weeks. Here is are a few images and montages from the first few shoots.

Wild Spain

Just got back from 5 days of wildlife photography in Spain which is why the blog has been quiet for the last week. The trip was not as successful as I had hoped due to the ground crew in Spain being hopeless and letting me down due to their inexperience as nature photographers. I’m still amazed at why people think they are experienced professional photographers just because they have a digital camera! After the first day we ditched the ground crew we had chosen to help us get a difficult species of bird but, by chance, we bumped into a professional Spanish wildlife photographer who did his best to help us out. Anyway, despite coming back with far fewer images than I’d expected, I’m pleased with some of the ones I got. Here are a couple of montages I have prepared for my nature photography website which will have a much bigger blog post later this week.

Wakefield glamour photographer: Nicole

Oxford based Nicole headed north to stay with her parents near Skipton so that she could come by the studio for a glamour portfolio shoot. I joined them at the studio after an emergency visit to the dentist as the wisdom tooth surgery was taking it’s toll now and an infection was causing me to run at half speed :¬\ That aside, we shot three lingerie outfits as well as a few beauty headshots but regardless of what Nicole’s wearing, it’s the intense eyes that reach out from the shots!

Studio light workshop: Halifax PS

Despite having just had an impacted wisdom tooth out and really not feeling on top of my game, I headed off to Halifax Photographic Society to give them a studio light workshop using a single light source. As ever, Laura came along as model for the night – I’m sure she could give the demo these days, she’s heard me spout on enough times :¬) We covered the basics of studio lighting and the differences between various light modifiers before setting up the lights and photographing Laura. I used a large softbox and a reflector to create some high key beauty lighting and also showed them how a single light can be feathered to give some moody shoots that look good as black and white images. Here are just a couple that I shot prior to the members shooting Laura.

Wakefield Headshots photographer: Sarah

Aspiring actress Sarah was in the studio today for a headshots photoshoot for her degree coursework after finding me on the web. For a simple headshot shoot I usually use a white background and a black background and I can shoot a few as a light grey background too simply by not lighting the white sweep too much, By holding back the light I get a really smooth 20% grey tone. As a headshots photographer, the success is all about engaging with the sitter and, although Sarah felt it best not to smile, I really think it lights up a face and a few smiley shots never go amiss in my opinion. Here’s just a quick post of a few of the shots.

If you’re in need of headshots, just send me a mail or pick up the phone to chat – 01924 229800.

Wakefield portrait photographer:

Quite a while back I did a commercial job with ‘Need Undies’  and recently, company director Gill, got in touch to see if I would shoot a family portrait for her in-law’s anniversary. Today the whole tribe arrived at the studio, three generations in all with baby Ava stealing the show. As usual, we did a whole combo of images so there will be a good range to choose from. Here are just a few to give a flavour of what we did.

To book me for your family shoot, just call the studio on 01924 229800 for a chat
