commercial photographer Wakefield: Today saw me back on site with Beaumont Legal to shoot some more staff headshots, some PR images of their new finance director as well as a few shots around the office to be used to illustrate an article in one of the legal journals. As the images have an embargo until they have been used for the PR purposes Beaumont’s have in mind, I can only post a couple as examples of the kind of images we cretaed. Last month I was commissioned by Gloss Hair Salon in Knaresborough for my first commercial hair salon photography shoot and today I was on site to create the images for a hair colouring contest that three of the stylists are entering. Salon owner, Emma, found me on the internet after searching for a new photographer to help out and decided that, although I had no previous hair salon experience, she’d trust my age and experience to get the shots – I’m old and I’m experienced so I met the brief fully :¬\

Although I haven’t previously specifically shot hair images, I have masses of headshots under my belt and I knew that it would be very similar and  just to make sure there was a good specular highlight on the hair to focus the viewer to that part of the image. Using a single large softbox as key and a 20 degree grid as a kicker in combination with a reflector, I shot against a neutral grey to give the images impact. The grey worked well on all the hair styles but particularly the copper tones of Vickie’s hair. The idea was to photograph three models each with two different looks and to emphasise the colouring that had been applied to the hair. Ultimately, the girls can only enter one shot in the competition and I’ve no idea how they will choose the shot from all the ones we got. I had a great time on the shoot and I pleased with the images and even if the girls don’t win, I think they did a fabulous job and you won’t go far wrong getting your latest cut at Gloss.

{corporate photography Wakefield}: Today I was back at Beaumont Legal over on the Paragon Business Park near Junction 41 and once again I was shooting some corporate photography, specifically headshots, of around 50 new starters. I did the same format as usual and used a white conference room wall as a backdrop and lit it to 255 white with two SB800s in silver brollies and used another SB800 as key in a softbox. In post I have changed the white wall to the specific web colour of the newly launched Beaumont Legal website so that the pictures will drop seamlessly into the site. Initially, all the images were to be on a white background but then the web developers altered a few to the background colour of the site and decided it looked better that way. As usual, the hard part is getting everyone relaxed and enjoying the photoshoot and that’s where hiring a professional makes sense – it;s not just about the technical skills but about the people skills too :¬)
