Railway at war – wartime weekend at Pickering

Every year the town of Pickering in North Yorkshire turns back the clock to October 1943 and has a commemorative war weekend when the whole town dresses up in 1940s clothes. The shops are covered with bomb blast tape, sandbags are piled up and the town centre is closed off to modern vehicles – only vintage restored vehicles are allowed to park up. The overall effect is so good that you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back in time or that you were on a film set as you walk among soldiers, RAF airmen and US military personnel as well as civilians in period costumes – ladies with fur trims and nylon stockings with seams up the back, spivvies in pin-striped suits, land girls, children with gas masks – it’s all there.

For me it provides a great photo opportunity to shoot both candid and formal portraits giving me some great images for the competition archives. Here’s a few from today but the event runs all weekend although other photo shoots have prevented my attending the rest of the weekend which is a real shame as the Saturday is a great day out and is the day when the big parade takes place. Get up there this weekend if you can, you won’t be disappointed!

Sonya’s boudoir shoot

Following on from Sonya’s recent session in the studio, she was back today for some sultry boudoir shots. Lots of  low key lighting and, of course, some wicked underwear were used to get the images we wanted. Boudoir photo sessions make fabulously unique gifts for that special person in your life, and with Christmas rapidly approaching, nows the time to be booking a session. Use the contact page to send me a mail, visit the main website or just pick up the phone and dial 01924 229800!

Stacey’s studio debut

When I shot Stacey for the first time we shot on location in an old abandoned workshop but today she made her first visit to my studio to shoot a few more images for her portfolio. We shot some natural light headshots along with some white infinity curve fashion images. Following this we did some black infinity curve images before ending with a few glamour style images shot in the entrance porch of the studio lit with a smidgen of flash gelled with a purple sweet wrapper!

Here are just very few images showing how we got on – I’m dashing straight out again after tea to shoot Sonya who is making a return visit to the studio to shoot some boudoir style images! There’ll be much more of Stacey and Sonya over the weekend as I work my way through the images in between a couple of other shoots that I have lined up over the next couple of days, including a portrait shoot and a pre-wedding shoot as well as some stock photography at the “Railway at war” weekend in Pickering!

15,000 blog hits!

I relaunched the blog in its current style in April this year and, staggeringly, it has had over 15,000 hits to date – 15,587 to be exact! The blog is my favourite part of the website and I love editing it straight after a shoot so that a) the clients get a sneak peek of what to expect and b) to showcase my work to a wider audience and to the regular viewers of the blog. I welcome comments and feedback so do feel free to leave something in the comments box beneath each post. Feedback is always welcome, it helps my development as a working photographer.  Let me know what you think of the blog and if you have any ideas for what you’d like to see. I  really appreciate everyone that takes the time to visit the site.

Verena Sophie Lauer – musician portfolio shoot

I saw Verena’s request for ‘a portfolio shoot with a difference’ on a forum website that I occasionally visit and, after sending her my details, I was pleased to find that I was the preferred photographer out of all those who replied to her request. As a classical musician just finishing her Masters degree she needed a portfolio shoot to have images for her website, publicity cards and for concert programmes etc. The brief was for something different to her peers’ who have all tended to go for studio portraits. So, I decided to take this talented German out into the wilds of Medieval Yorkshire and we conducted the shoot at Fountains Abbey followed by some sunset shots at Brimham rocks. Verena, currently studying at Birmingham Conservetoire, travelled up for the day and after a quick hair and make-up session in my studio, we headed off into the sunny autumn sunlight to begin shooting.

The Stringers in the studio

With gusts of up to 40mph today, it was a good job we were in the studio and not on location for the Stringer’s family shoot. Tina was looking for a present for her parents of  her and her brother’s family which we got along with a variety of other images, despite the bedlam that ensued following my assistant getting the choccies out way too early!
