York wedding photographer: Cecile & Alessandro

York wedding photographer at The Pavillion: With a French bride to be and an Italian groom, I am going to have my linguistic skills put to the test at Cecile and Alessandro’s wedding at The Pavillion, York in a week’s time! My French is limited to schoolboy levels and my Italian just about stretches to ‘ciao’ but no matter, it’s going to be a great affair and I am looking forward to the big day. The couple came over to my studio just a few weeks ago to see some sample work and kindly booked me as their York wedding photographer and so tonight, we had a meet up in the ancient city to go through the details and to also have a bit of a pre-wedding shoot. We started in the Museum Gardens but only had a brief spell there as we didn’t meet until 7.30pm and, unbeknown to me, the gardens close at 8:00pm! From here we headed down to the riverside and worked our way along to Lendal Bridge where we made the most of the last rays of sunlight which bathed us in golden light. The wedding will be a small, family affair with guests and relatives flying in from Italy and France for the weekend and, if the weather holds, I think they’ll be in for a fabulous break and celebrations in York.

Wakefield commercial photographer: Bellway Homes PR shoot

As a Wakefield commercial photographer, it’s always a pleasure to receive commissions from new clients and today I did my first shoot for Bellway Homes on location at Newton Hill Cricket Club. Bellway have donated several new benches to be used around the cricket ground at local Wakefield team Newton Hill CC and my brief was to capture some shots of the benches along with key members of the cricket club. Unbeknown to me until I arrived at the ground, I knew the club chairman as he was a forner client of mine when I was wedding phtographer on his big day at Darrington a few years ago! After a quick catchup, we decided to use one of the benches that had a large willow tree behind it and also the sidescreen as this spot gave the best background – the ground is surrounded by houses and the backgrounds were messy. Although I had chosen the best backdrop, it meant I was now shooting directly into the very strong afternoon sun which was going to make me have to pay attention to the lighting. However, this is one of my favourite scenarios in which to create some vibrant images. By shooting with the subject’s back to the sun and lighting them with a 500w flash head and additional fill from a large Profoto sunsoft reflector, I was able to come up with some colourful, editorial images. Using an extreme wide angle allowed me to get low and use the benches in the foreground as a lead in but the 14-24mm lens is very prone to lens flare. However, I think the flare adds to the shots and is not too much of a distraction. The client was very happy with the final images!

Wakefield Wedding Photographer: Laura & Dan pre-wedding

It’s quite a while since I wore my Wakefield wedding photographer hat, I’ve been so busy with commercial shoots that I’ve not had much time for weddings. However, all that is about to change with a flurry of weddings coming up over the next few weeks. At the moment, I’m in the pre-wedding shooting season and today I met up with Laura and Dan to get the details for their up coming wedding at Wheetwood Hall in Leeds in September. We met at Abbey Museum gardens in Kirkstall late afternoon but the summer sunshine was still harsh enough to be troublesome for the camera with harsh shadows and strong highlights everywhere. Here is a selection of the images from the shoot to give a flavour of what we did. It won’t be long before I meet up with them again on September 9th for the big day.

Wakefield commercial photographer: Yorkshire Air Ambulance mascots

As a Wakefield commercial photographer, I get to shoot a wide variety of subjects and today was certainly a fun and enjoyable one. I was down at the Yorkshire Air Ambulance base at Nostell to photograph the new YAA mascots for publicity material and the weather was perfect for the shoot. The costumes were superb and will be a big hit with the children when they go out on the road but for today’s shoot, I wanted to get them with the air crew and the helicopter. We headed out onto the helipad and I used a Profoto B1 on full power to overpower the very bright sunshine. I shot with the subjects standing against the sunlight to give me a nice backlight and then, by shooting without the diffuser on the octa, I punched a massive amount of light into the subject to get these studio effect portraits

Fitness shoot for Rebecca

Rebecca booked me for a fitness shoot ahead of her upcoming competition while she was in peak condition. She’s had a fitness shoot in the past but wasn’t happy with the images she received so decided to book with me after my being recommended to her by another model. The shoot went well and Becky has kindly allowed me to publish a few here as a taster of what we shot. I used a white sweep and a black sweep to create different looks along with different styles of lighting, all designed to emphasise the muscle tone.

If you’d like a fitness shoot like Rebecca, just call the studio on 01924 229800 for a chat

Commercial photographer: Location Portraits for Redrow Homes

Another day of creating location portraits, this time for Redrow Homes at their site in Horsforth. The brief was to get shots of Redrow site manager with his counterpart from Dimestage to illustrate a collaborative project to convert the old listed mill which is in the middle of the site. There wasn’t a great deal left of the building really and the site was incredibly busy with construction traffic, so I went for a quick shot of the guys in front of the building and a few shots inside of them discussing the project. A few props such as architectural plans might have been handy here but they weren’t available so, as a photographer, you just have to think on your feet and go with what you have.
