Yorkshire Air Ambulance: Sikh fundraiser

First job back after the Christmas break, this time at Ramgarhia Gurdwara Sikh temple in Leeds. There was a big festival taking place and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance fundraisers had a stall in the entrance hall selling goods and taking donations for their charity. I was there to capture some press and PR images for publicity purposes but, as a protrait photographer, I was captivated by the amount fo Sikh gentlemen with huge great beards and also by some of the women in traditional costume. So, after taking the press and PR images, I decided to ask one of the temple goers if I could take his portrait. The environment wasn’t ideal as there were no plain walls for a background and lots of clutter such as TV screens, bunting and people so I had to improvise and create a portrait using a single small speedlight. I achieved this by eliminating ambiemt light using a low ISO, high shutter and small aperture and then using a speedlight at 1/16th power to light the subject. I have to say I was pleased with the portrait and I knew I’d captured something special as soon as I’d taken the image. The first image shows where I took the image and then my favourite shot.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance portraits

Late afternoon today found me on the helipad at the Yorkshire Air Ambulabce base at Nostell, close to where I live. I was here on a commission to photograph tow new staff members Matty and Owen, a new paramedic and pilot. The winter sunlight was fading and the skies clearing after a heavy storm and this made for perfect lighting for the shots. I used a single Profoto B1x in a 90cm octa to provide a key light and by underexposing the sky, the light adds drama to the images.

Wakefield interiors photographer: Wyke property

Wakefield interiors photographer: I’ve been commissioned for interiors photography a few times now and I always enjoy the shoots as they provide a great challenge to me in terms of being creative and finding the angles. I generally shoot from a tripod and go with natural light, often capturing a series of images so that I have a good range of exposures in case I need to adjust anything in post. Sometimes, I use a bit of judicious flash just to give a lift to the images. Today I was shooting a property in Wyke for a client that has used me previously for interiors. The property has just been renovated and these images are to be used for advertising the space on various websites and social media so I try to make the place look airy, bright and clean to give the property maximum rental potential. If you like the style of interior photography I produce for my clients and are in need of some image of your own, just give me a call on 01924 229800 for a chat.

Wakefield commercial photographer: Image creation for Big Cheese Agency

As a Wakefield commercial photographer, it’s always great to work with local companies and today I shot for the Big Cheese Agency who are based at Nostell just a mile from where I live. The brief was to create an image to advertise the new information staff at the Doncaster Frenchgate Shopping Centre. I was asked to source a male model for the shoot  and so I contacted Featherstone based international model Jason Dean. I’ve worked with Jase before so I knew that if he was around at the time of the shoot, he’d turn up and be a great asset to the shoot. Chris, from the Big Cheese Agency, arrived with the uniform and once we had Jase made up as an information officer, the shoot was done pretty quickly. This is not normally how one sees Jason, generally, he is in something skimpy showing of his six-pack. I’m hoping the ladies don’t flock to Frenchgate in the hope of getting directions off Jason! 😉

Alt model portfolio shoot: SammyP Model

I’m often booked for an alt model portfolio shoot as I  have a bit of a reputation for working with the alternative tattooed models – everyone who knows me knows that I adore shooting the tattooed set even though I’m not brave enough to have a tattoo of my own 🙂 Sammy and I met on Facebook and finally, she made the trip down from her home town of Scarborough for a shoot in my studio. We stuck to a fashion and portrait based theme and used various backdrops and props that I have in my studio (scythe, gothic ruffles and collars etc) to create some fabulous images for both our portfolios. I love Sammy’s strong cheekbone and facial structure and her hair, which she recently shaved off and is now growing back, was for me the perfect style for her face. Sammy had brought a few wigs with her but I refused to use any and, instead, stuck with the short hair.

Wakefield portrait & fashion photographer: portfolio update for Kelly

Wakefield portrait & fashion photographer: Kelly came up from Sheffield today for an update to her portfolio for an agency submission. Being an experienced model made my job very easy for once as she needed no direction. We did a set of headshots, some fashion and a sportswear set as part of the shoot using a variety of backdrops from white to grey. Kelly wanted all the images to be on a simple clean background to comply with the agency website so that’s what we did. As ever, just a sample here as I am catching up on the blog and posting this a long time after the shoot!
