A bit of a change in the studio today shooting a male portfolio. Lots of girls come over to get their portfolios done but very few guys drop by, probably due to embarassment, but James got over the nerves hurdle and dropped by for a shoot. James had seen some of my work that I’ve done for a few of the girls he knows socially (everyone knows everyone in Wakefield!) and he decided he’d like to have a shoot done for keepsake. Like all males of his age he has very few, if any, photos of himself but we put that to rights in grand style today! As a fireman, James is required to keep himself physically fit for his work but I suspect he also paid a visit to the gym earlier this week as his phsyique is very much like my own :¬\
Photographing males is a whole different ball game to females; with girls the light source needs to be huge and very close to the subject to achieve a soft, wrap-around lighting that softens the feel of the image and enhances beauty. With James, however, I went for much harsher directional lighting to increase contrast and define the contours of the body. The result is a set of fine images for James’ portfolio. And yes girls, we are selling posters! ;¬)

Here are a few images of gothic model Calamity Vain taken inside a beautiful old church on the outskirts of Bristol. The gothic arches and stone pillars made a superb backdrop to the photos and the long heavy dresses were killer and just so right for the shoot. I used some very low key lighting to give the images a Byronesque feel of gothic romance and sorrowful desolation. Got to dig out something suitable from My Dying Bride or The Sins of Thy Beloved while I finish the edit. I do so love a bit of a Gothic metal soundtrack while I work.
Julia, a professional dance instructor, came to the studio today for some headshots and street dance images for her portfolio. I didn’t realise until she came to the studio that we’d met once before when I did a shoot for Full on Flirt, a speed dating operation at the Stereo bar in Wakefield, where I photographed Julia as she performed salsa dancing for the crowds. Today’s brief was to get some headshots, full body shots and some dance shots depicting street dance and zuma (I’d never heard of that either!) for use in her portfolio and flyers advertising her classes. I also thought it might be an idea to finally use a location I’ve had in mind for ages, but never seemed to get round to shooting, to do some grungy street style images too. So, we had a good day, firstly in the studio then on location and what a location!

Air hostess Leigh hit the studio today during a leave period to have a portfolio shoot for no other reason than she wanted to! No asperations to become a model, just wanting a great set of images that she can put in an album as a keepsake. Partly she wanted to do it because she felt she isn’t photogenic and that she didn’t have any flattering pictures of herself and she said she always avoids having her photo taken - her fiancee had persuaded her otherwise. I agree with her fiancee and after the usual nervous start to the shoot, she was soon relaxed and enjoying herself. A petit girl with a really great figure and elfin face, she made a great subject and it was easy to come up with a mixture of portraits, fashion and some lingerie images that will hopefully convince her she’s not too bad looking after all!

Claire breezed into the studio today on what seemed like the hottest and brightest day so far. She’d booked to come over for a lingerie portfolio shoot - very popular these days - and we made the most of the summer light, shooting all around the studio to give us a variety of looks. Abi dropped by the studio for a professional portfolio shoot today. She’s had a couple of shoots previously with amateur photographers but after not being happy with the results, she decided to take the plunge and go with a pro! Digital photography has made photography available to the masses and there’s lots of ‘guys with cameras’ that will happy to take a few images of you, but in the end, average shots, no matter how they’re processed on the computer, are still average shots! The advantage of shooting with a pro, is that images are correct at the taking stage! I’ve shot with film cameras as well as digital and I have experience in lighting, composition and even posing, so you will definately come away some some awesome images for your portfolio. All these shots of Abi are straight out of the camera with little post processing other than saturation and vignettes added. Abi had a pro make-up artist work on her before she came to the studio and the result of that is obvious too. Melissa is just about to head back for another stint on board the cruise ships, spending the next few months in and around the Caribbean where she works as a beautician in the ship’s spa centre. Before going back this time, however, Melissa decided to drop by VERVEstudio for a portfolio shoot. The shoot was a blast and working our way around the studio, we came up with lots of different styles in the various parts of the building. Here are a few of my favourites. So, Sarah the make-up artist has arrived, the studio is set up, camera primed and we’re ready to shoot a portfolio but hang on! Where’s the client? Just before the kick-off time, we get a call from her saying that her car has broken down! Aargh! So now what? Sarah’s come all the way from Halifax to do the make-up and I was all fired up for a shoot. Only one thing for it - the girl next door! Kat lives adjacent to the studio and Monday’s are her day off, so we go and fetch her and offer her a free make-over and portrait shoot. Looking slightly nervous but seemingly keen, Kat nipped off to get some gear and came back to the studio and Sarah got to work. We got some great images and I’m sure it was a completely different day to what Kat had planned! This evening I was in the studio to shoot Faye Johnson’s fashion collection. The set of three dresses were her unique designs that she was submitting for the final part of her fashion degree and Faye needed some high quality fashionista images to go in her portfolio. The studio seemed full of people all bustling around as we shot the images using two models, Bryony & Emma, and there was just a great sense of fun and pride as the girls strutted their stuff for me as I clicked away. Abi was a bridesmaid at Scott and Amy’s wedding a while back and my friend Jannine whom I shot the wedding with over in Keighley asked if she could bring Abi over to the studio for a bit of a practise session with the studio lighting. So tonight they came over and we also had the company of Sarah Aveyard as MUA who did a great job on the make-up for the shoot.
