Julia, a professional dance instructor, came to the studio today for some headshots and street dance images for her portfolio. I didn’t realise until she came to the studio that we’d met once before when I did a shoot for Full on Flirt, a speed dating operation at the Stereo bar in Wakefield, where I photographed Julia as she performed salsa dancing for the crowds. Today’s brief was to get some headshots, full body shots and some dance shots depicting street dance and zuma (I’d never heard of that either!) for use in her portfolio and flyers advertising her classes. I also thought it might be an idea to finally use a location I’ve had in mind for ages, but never seemed to get round to shooting, to do some grungy street style images too. So, we had a good day, firstly in the studio then on location and what a location!

Claire breezed into the studio today on what seemed like the hottest and brightest day so far. She’d booked to come over for a lingerie portfolio shoot - very popular these days - and we made the most of the summer light, shooting all around the studio to give us a variety of looks. So, Sarah the make-up artist has arrived, the studio is set up, camera primed and we’re ready to shoot a portfolio but hang on! Where’s the client?  Just before the kick-off time, we get a call from her saying that her car has broken down! Aargh! So now what? Sarah’s come all the way from Halifax to do the make-up and I was all fired up for a shoot. Only one thing for it - the girl next door! Kat lives adjacent to the studio and Monday’s are her day off, so we go and fetch her and offer her a free make-over and portrait shoot. Looking slightly nervous but seemingly keen, Kat nipped off to get some gear and came back to the studio and Sarah got to work. We got some great images and I’m sure it was a completely different day to what Kat had planned! Maddy made a return visit to the studio today and, although it was a cold wind outside, the bright spring sunshine flooded into the studio making it perfect for some high key, summery fashion shots. The studio is a converted chapel, and has huge arched windows on three of the four sides and the sunlight just pours in making it very bright and airy. Although this can be a drawback to shooting low key work such as boudoir, it was ideal for what I had in mind for Maddy which was to shoot some high key images with a very shallow depth of field. Using just two lights to boost the colours and contrast we came up with a fabulous variety of images, though that’s not hard to do when you’re working with someone of Maddy’s calibre;  this is only the second shoot she’s had - her first being back in March when she came to the studio! As an aside, all these images are uploaded straight from camera and none have been retouched!

Photographers might like to know that Maddy is going to be the model for the first studio portrait workshop in two weeks time. The workshop will be on a Wednesday evening for around 2.5hrs and place are limited to 5 photographers so if you’re interested, get a mail off to me quickly!

The studio lights had hardly a chance to cool from Dean Huffinley’s shoot this morning before Derek & Lisa of Rescue Accident & Assistance arrived for some corporate headshots. Lisa’s brief was that the images shouldn’t be just stuffy corporate images but that we should inject a little fun into the shoot while getting the professional image across. They also brought with them the company mascot in the form of a 6ft teddy which they wanted to incorporate into some of the shots too. The shoot resulted in a mix of individual portraits, shots of them together and, of course, shots of them with the bear.  For your corporate photography contact me on 01924 229800

Dean dropped by this morning for a portfolio shoot to get some images to accompany the CDs that he sends of to his agents. The brief was for a few headshots and full length portraits that would give prospective clients an idea of his appearance so that they can match him to the work on offer. Apparently his forte is Nessun Dorma (which translates to ‘none shall sleep’ if you didn’t know!) so if you’re after a big voice and some great entertainment for your wedding, then Dean’s the man for you!

Hannah arrived at the studio today for a portfolio shoot to mark her turning 18 and I have to say that she is very photogenic indeed. The shoot was a mix of fashion and portrait using a variety of backdrops, but I’m particularly pleased with the white background shots and the ‘retro’ feel to the images which have a swinging 60s feel to them.

It’s getting kinda cosmopolitan in the studio of late what with Maddy from Latvia last week and Maja from Poland last night! Maja had seen my work on a modelling website and contacted me for a portfolio shoot quite a few weeks ago now, but last night we managed to hook up for the shoot and timed it with a visit north from my favourite MUA, Lyndsey Ward. Having a professional make-up artist makes a huge difference to the shoot I think, especially when they stay throughout the shoot and are constantly touching up the make-up or hair and also changing the style to go with the different outfits. However, it can also eat into shooting time too! My goodness! After a week of cancellations and postponement of shoots for various reasons, it was good to get back into the studio. Maddy came by for a portfolio shoot and was just such a natural in front of the camera it wasn’t hard for me to get a whole bunch of different looks and styles from one portfolio shoot! We worked hard and fast and changed backdrops and clothes in rapid succession and, after three hours, ended up with around 1500 images to edit! Here are a few from the very quick first edit.
