Chris and Amy vacated south Wales, where they currently live, to head north to Yorkshire to visit Amy’s parents for the weekend. As we’ve all got some busy weekends ahead of us before their big day at Nostell Priory in August, we decided to meet up for a pre-wedding photo-fest while we had time. The rendezvous was a car park at a local woodland from where we headed along the pathway to an open glade that I really like. The tree canopy gave us some lovely open shade away from the bright sunshine and its really hard to beat open shade for photos, especially if you can soften the shadows with a bit of subtle fill. These two guys were not phased by the camera and we got some cracking relaxed portraits of them and I have high hopes of repeating it on August 21st at Nostell Priory. I just hope today’s weather can repeat itself too :¬)

Jason & Nelly were married at the Kingdom Hall, Wakefield followed by a reception at Hatfield Hall (NormantonGolf Club) at Stanley, Wakefield. The weather held off for most of the morning and we managed to dodge a few showers leading up to the wedding breakfast but we were treated to some spectacular evening sunshine in the early evening when we did a few more shots of the couple. The whole day went off without a hitch and I met up with lots of familiar faces from previous weddings that I have photographed for Nelly & Jason’s friends. The bridesmaids were incorrigible towards the end of the day and we had great fun larking around with them - great stuff girls!

Kelly & Matt get married in late August at St Paul’s church, Hanging Heaton before heading on to Gomersall Park Hotel for their reception but tonight we were in Rectory Park, Thornhill for a pre-wedding planning meet and also a bit of a pre-wedding shoot. We should have met last night but an almighty thunder storm put paid to that and, for a brief moment, I thought we were going to get it again tonight! However, the clouds parted briefly giving us some lovely storm light and so I dusted off the old nifty fifty to shoot directly into the sun for some added flare and softening of the images. My old Nikkor 50mm 1.8 gets flare at the best of time, so pointing it anywhere near the sun just sent it into oblivion as far as flare goes but I’ve put a few here as I do like the softness that was created.

Met up with Lisa and Steven at Kirkstall Abbey today for a pre-wedding meeting and a bit of a shoot. It’s less than a week to their wedding at the Holiday Inn at Tong near Guildersome so I was cutting it fine! We used the museum gardens for the shoot as Kirkstall Abbey looked to be crawling with folks due to the summer weather. The gardens, however, were really good and I suspect I’ll be doing a few more shoots there and it was devoid of people so no-one to bother us. Although it was a hot one today, its looking a little more unsettled for Lisa & Steve’s big day on Friday but I still think we’re going to end up with some great images!

Another fine summer’s day, this time for the wedding of  Charlotte and James who were married at St Mary’s Church, Badsworth before moving on to the reception at Burntwood Court at Brierley. St Mary’s Church is a great location for photographs but with proceedings running a slightly late, we did most of the formals at Burntwood which is a little more challenging for the photographer but we captured some really nice intimate portraits of Charlotte & James before the wedding breakfast. Then later in the evening, we hit a location I had scouted a few days prior to the wedding to do some romantic woodland images for the storybook album before finishing the evening with a slideshow using 70 images from the day’s events!

Here are a few images from the day and, as always, if you want to see more of my work go to the wedding pages on the main website or call 01924 229800 to drop by for a chat.

I met up with Kristian & Rachel at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park today to go through their wedding plans in readiness for their big day at Cragrats Brasserie early next month. I chose YSP as it was about mid-way for both of us, but I hadn’t reckoned on the over zealous jobworths who objected to our using the sculptures as props in the photoshoot! After a little reasoning with them they allowed us to move to a quieter part of the park and left us to get on with it. Sheesh! After the shoot we went up to Cragrats to scout the venue and I have to say it was just as I remembered it and I reckon it will be a real cool place to shoot - very different from the usual venues and very much a boutique wedding. Oh, and the fillet steak I had for lunch was pretty good too :¬)

To learn more about my wedding photography and join me in getting thrown out of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park during pre-wedding shoots, go to the wedding pages on the main website.

Phew! Talk about a hot and humid day for a wedding! I think we were all feeling the heat by the time everyone went in for the wedding breakfast but I think we all enjoyed the day and had some great photo opportunities. Sue and Paul were married just across the road from the Holmfield Arms at St James’ Church, Thornes and what a superb place for some photographs! My intial thoughts were to use Thornes Park for the main bride and groom images but with such a verdant location at the church, it made sense to do a quick shoot there before moving up to the Holmfield Arms. After shooting the formals up at Holmfield, we had a quick sortie into Thornes Park with the bride and groom just prior to the wedding breakfast and afterwards, we had a short session shooting in the hotel itself just to get some boutique style images. Sue is very much into the Gothic scene but toned everything down for the wedding  and, despite hinting she may be doing the first dance to the metalcore sounds of Avenged Sevenfold, they went for a more smoochy song! However, you all know my penchant for all things Gothic, so I suspect I will be getting Sue into the studio after the honeymoon in her boned corsets and knee-length Doc Martins for an out ‘n’ out Goth style shoot. Watch this space!

Well, that hot weather was bound to disappear eventually and I suspected it would be at Andy & Clare’s wedding: every time I have met these two its been raining! However, the wet weather couldn’t dampen the spirit of the couple and we enjoyed a great day and eventually got outside in the early evening as the rain cleared. Andy and Clare were married at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Huddersfield before being driven to Tankersley Manor by their friend Fraser, who just happened to own a 4.5ltr Ford Mustang GT. The heavens opened as we arrived at Tankersley for the reception so we set about group shots in the barn hoping for a break in the weather but, alas! It was not to be. However, we made the best of the situation hopping from doorway to doorway but after the wedding breakfast the rain relented and there was even a hint of late evening sun, so we managed a further quick photo session before the first dance.

I met with Andy & Clare a few weeks back to go through the final planning of their wedding later this month at Tankersley Manor, and at that point we were due to do a pre-wedding shoot just to get them used to being photographed. However, on the day they came to the studio the rain hammered down and instead of nipping up to Bretton Park for the shoot, we did a short session in the studio. So, we rescheduled a shoot for another evening and that day came and again the heavens opened so we postponed to the beginning of this week and guess what! It rained again forcing us to shift dates again!  Last night, however, we went for the shoot regardless and made it to Bretton Park under heavy, threatening and leaden skies with even a bit of drizzle. I’m beginning to sense a pattern here and I think I can guess what the weather is going to be like on 29th May :¬)

The light levels were very low by 7:30pm so I opted to use the heavy skies to create some moody and dramatic shots by using a few speedlights to provide the lighting while at the same time dropping the sky down a stop or two. Here are a few shots done at dusk yesterday amid biting midges and light drizzle!
