Over the last couple of years there has been a growing interest in using off-camera flash to create dynamic and punchy portraits. Despite the fact that photographers are able to shoot natural light images in lower light conditions than ever before, due largely to the capabilities of digital cameras, there is a huge swing towards lighting the subject with small flashes (dubbed speedlights) and using daylight as the fill light, rather than the other way around as traditionally been the case.

New to off-camera flash? This course is aimed at those with little or no experience in using speedlights off camera to light portraits and other subjects. In this course we will begin the day in the studio and cover the theory of using flashes off camera and how to adjust your camera’s settings so that you can blend the light from the flashes with that of daylight or even use the flashes to overpower daylight. We’ll look at the equipment that you will need to trigger your flashes, lighting stands, light modifiers, exposure for both flash and ambient, how to place flashes for the best lighting followed by practical hands-on sessions on location with two models

Requirements: Although this is a beginners guide to lighting, it is not a beginners guide to photography and as a minimum you will need to be able to operate your camera fully and understand how to set the exposure system into manual mode.
