Sonya was back in the studio today to add some more photos to her portfolio ahead of what she believes to be a milestone birthday! Her idea was for a mix of fashion and glamour shots to look back on now that she’s ‘knocking on’ - her words not mine :¬) So, that was the brief, here are some of the images. We shot some high key studio stuff then moving on to the bathroom set, the spiral staircase and apartment sets before ending up outside and shooting some lingerie with an almost Mediterranean feel to them in the warm September sunshine. Only had time to edit a few, so much to get through and so little time before tomorrow’s corporate shoot, but these images should give you a flavour of the day.

Here are a few images of gothic model Calamity Vain taken inside a beautiful old church on the outskirts of Bristol. The gothic arches and stone pillars made a superb backdrop to the photos and the long heavy dresses were killer and just so right for the shoot. I used some very low key lighting to give the images a Byronesque feel of gothic romance and sorrowful desolation. Got to dig out something suitable from My Dying Bride or The Sins of Thy Beloved while I finish the edit. I do so love a bit of a Gothic metal soundtrack while I work.
Julia, a professional dance instructor, came to the studio today for some headshots and street dance images for her portfolio. I didn’t realise until she came to the studio that we’d met once before when I did a shoot for Full on Flirt, a speed dating operation at the Stereo bar in Wakefield, where I photographed Julia as she performed salsa dancing for the crowds. Today’s brief was to get some headshots, full body shots and some dance shots depicting street dance and zuma (I’d never heard of that either!) for use in her portfolio and flyers advertising her classes. I also thought it might be an idea to finally use a location I’ve had in mind for ages, but never seemed to get round to shooting, to do some grungy street style images too. So, we had a good day, firstly in the studio then on location and what a location!

Air hostess Leigh hit the studio today during a leave period to have a portfolio shoot for no other reason than she wanted to! No asperations to become a model, just wanting a great set of images that she can put in an album as a keepsake. Partly she wanted to do it because she felt she isn’t photogenic and that she didn’t have any flattering pictures of herself and she said she always avoids having her photo taken - her fiancee had persuaded her otherwise. I agree with her fiancee and after the usual nervous start to the shoot, she was soon relaxed and enjoying herself. A petit girl with a really great figure and elfin face, she made a great subject and it was easy to come up with a mixture of portraits, fashion and some lingerie images that will hopefully convince her she’s not too bad looking after all!

It was a real girlie day in the the studio today - the whole place was awash with diamonds, furs and make-up for the shoot for a local jewellers in Huddersfield. Jodie, who works in the shop, was to be the model for the day and we had a top MUA & stylist Jessie Young who, although sounds like a wild west outlaw, was no cowboy when it came to the make-up! The shoot was to be a mix of high fashion and close-ups of the jewels and the idea is that the pieces being worn in each shot will be photographed individually and then the graphics guys will create brochure pages with each of the pieces blown up big alongside the main fashion image. Here’s a few of the fashion style images we did to be going on with.
This evening I was in the studio to shoot Faye Johnson’s fashion collection. The set of three dresses were her unique designs that she was submitting for the final part of her fashion degree and Faye needed some high quality fashionista images to go in her portfolio. The studio seemed full of people all bustling around as we shot the images using two models, Bryony & Emma, and there was just a great sense of fun and pride as the girls strutted their stuff for me as I clicked away. Maddy made a return visit to the studio today and, although it was a cold wind outside, the bright spring sunshine flooded into the studio making it perfect for some high key, summery fashion shots. The studio is a converted chapel, and has huge arched windows on three of the four sides and the sunlight just pours in making it very bright and airy. Although this can be a drawback to shooting low key work such as boudoir, it was ideal for what I had in mind for Maddy which was to shoot some high key images with a very shallow depth of field. Using just two lights to boost the colours and contrast we came up with a fabulous variety of images, though that’s not hard to do when you’re working with someone of Maddy’s calibre; this is only the second shoot she’s had - her first being back in March when she came to the studio! As an aside, all these images are uploaded straight from camera and none have been retouched!
Photographers might like to know that Maddy is going to be the model for the first studio portrait workshop in two weeks time. The workshop will be on a Wednesday evening for around 2.5hrs and place are limited to 5 photographers so if you’re interested, get a mail off to me quickly!
Chloe hit the studio today for a glamour portfolio shoot. We really worked hard and used a wide variety of props and backgrounds to get what’s probably my favourite set of images from the studio for a while. All fairly simple lighting but very effective and Chloe was really great as a model despite it being her first shoot! Here’s a very small selection. Watch out for her on the magazine stands soon!

Hannah arrived at the studio today for a portfolio shoot to mark her turning 18 and I have to say that she is very photogenic indeed. The shoot was a mix of fashion and portrait using a variety of backdrops, but I’m particularly pleased with the white background shots and the ‘retro’ feel to the images which have a swinging 60s feel to them.

Had a long day in the studio today shooting the new web catalog for LoveSuspenders. Not nearly as glamourous as its sounds, it involved a lot of standing around while the garments were arranged perfectly and then I’d shoot to a given set of parameters so that there was consistency throughout the images. We shot everything on white backgrounds so that the images could be dropped onto background templates or have text dropped onto them. But then at the end of the shoot, I got to play and have some creative input as we shot the ‘impact’ images for the website. The impact images are more pictorial than the standard packshot or editorial image. I used the old cheval mirror and the boudoir wall to create a moody image that would show both front and rear of the garment in the same shot.
