Sonya was back in the studio today to add some more photos to her portfolio ahead of what she believes to be a milestone birthday! Her idea was for a mix of fashion and glamour shots to look back on now that she’s ‘knocking on’ - her words not mine :¬) So, that was the brief, here are some of the images. We shot some high key studio stuff then moving on to the bathroom set, the spiral staircase and apartment sets before ending up outside and shooting some lingerie with an almost Mediterranean feel to them in the warm September sunshine. Only had time to edit a few, so much to get through and so little time before tomorrow’s corporate shoot, but these images should give you a flavour of the day.

Xavia arrived in the studio this morning for her portfolio shoot that her mum & dad had booked as a suprise for her 14th birthday. She brought lots of outfits for us to use and we shot a selection of fashion and beauty shots on various backgrounds in the two hours. When you meet Xavia you can’t help but notice her eyes - have a look at the pictures to see what I mean :¬) Lots of images to go at from the shoot but I’m so far behind in editing after my recent two week hols that I need to catch up on a few weddings!

Here are a few images of gothic model Calamity Vain taken inside a beautiful old church on the outskirts of Bristol. The gothic arches and stone pillars made a superb backdrop to the photos and the long heavy dresses were killer and just so right for the shoot. I used some very low key lighting to give the images a Byronesque feel of gothic romance and sorrowful desolation. Got to dig out something suitable from My Dying Bride or The Sins of Thy Beloved while I finish the edit. I do so love a bit of a Gothic metal soundtrack while I work.
It was a real girlie day in the the studio today - the whole place was awash with diamonds, furs and make-up for the shoot for a local jewellers in Huddersfield. Jodie, who works in the shop, was to be the model for the day and we had a top MUA & stylist Jessie Young who, although sounds like a wild west outlaw, was no cowboy when it came to the make-up! The shoot was to be a mix of high fashion and close-ups of the jewels and the idea is that the pieces being worn in each shot will be photographed individually and then the graphics guys will create brochure pages with each of the pieces blown up big alongside the main fashion image. Here’s a few of the fashion style images we did to be going on with.
Abi dropped by the studio for a professional portfolio shoot today. She’s had a couple of shoots previously with amateur photographers but after not being happy with the results, she decided to take the plunge and go with a pro! Digital photography has made photography available to the masses and there’s lots of ‘guys with cameras’ that will happy to take a few images of you, but in the end, average shots, no matter how they’re processed on the computer, are still average shots! The advantage of shooting with a pro, is that images are correct at the taking stage! I’ve shot with film cameras as well as digital and I have experience in lighting, composition and even posing, so you will definately come away some some awesome images for your portfolio. All these shots of Abi are straight out of the camera with little post processing other than saturation and vignettes added. Abi had a pro make-up artist work on her before she came to the studio and the result of that is obvious too. So, Sarah the make-up artist has arrived, the studio is set up, camera primed and we’re ready to shoot a portfolio but hang on! Where’s the client? Just before the kick-off time, we get a call from her saying that her car has broken down! Aargh! So now what? Sarah’s come all the way from Halifax to do the make-up and I was all fired up for a shoot. Only one thing for it - the girl next door! Kat lives adjacent to the studio and Monday’s are her day off, so we go and fetch her and offer her a free make-over and portrait shoot. Looking slightly nervous but seemingly keen, Kat nipped off to get some gear and came back to the studio and Sarah got to work. We got some great images and I’m sure it was a completely different day to what Kat had planned! This evening I was in the studio to shoot Faye Johnson’s fashion collection. The set of three dresses were her unique designs that she was submitting for the final part of her fashion degree and Faye needed some high quality fashionista images to go in her portfolio. The studio seemed full of people all bustling around as we shot the images using two models, Bryony & Emma, and there was just a great sense of fun and pride as the girls strutted their stuff for me as I clicked away. After threatening to do it for ages, I’ve finally organised a group portrait night for photographers wanting to come to the studio to have a go at shooting with a model using the studio lights. The shoot will be on Wednesday 19th May and will have space for 5 photographers. Anyone shooting Nikon will have the chance to use some of my fast pro glass if they wish. To avoid disappointment book early by sending me a mail. The model for the night will be Maddy and I’ve done a small video from our recent shoot to give you all an idea of what you’ll be shooting!

Maddy made a return visit to the studio today and, although it was a cold wind outside, the bright spring sunshine flooded into the studio making it perfect for some high key, summery fashion shots. The studio is a converted chapel, and has huge arched windows on three of the four sides and the sunlight just pours in making it very bright and airy. Although this can be a drawback to shooting low key work such as boudoir, it was ideal for what I had in mind for Maddy which was to shoot some high key images with a very shallow depth of field. Using just two lights to boost the colours and contrast we came up with a fabulous variety of images, though that’s not hard to do when you’re working with someone of Maddy’s calibre; this is only the second shoot she’s had - her first being back in March when she came to the studio! As an aside, all these images are uploaded straight from camera and none have been retouched!
Photographers might like to know that Maddy is going to be the model for the first studio portrait workshop in two weeks time. The workshop will be on a Wednesday evening for around 2.5hrs and place are limited to 5 photographers so if you’re interested, get a mail off to me quickly!
Chloe hit the studio today for a glamour portfolio shoot. We really worked hard and used a wide variety of props and backgrounds to get what’s probably my favourite set of images from the studio for a while. All fairly simple lighting but very effective and Chloe was really great as a model despite it being her first shoot! Here’s a very small selection. Watch out for her on the magazine stands soon!
